Lewis Rice was born on 1 March 1849, in Conway, Massachusetts. He was the son of Franklin E. Rice (1825-1885) and Sophia Putnam (Taylor) Rice (1827-1918).[1]

On 4 October 1870, Lewis married Lucy (Sanderson) Rice (1845-1916) in Ashfield, Massachusetts.[4]
Lewis and Lucy Rice lived for many years on Main Street in Ashfield, next to the Baptist Church (later, the Grange Hall, and later still, the Ashfield Community Center). He drove the stage between Ashfield and Conway. In later years they removed to South Ashfield.

Lewis died on 3 February 1920 at age 70 in Ashfield. He is buried in Plain Cemetery in Ashfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts.[6]
