Richard was one of the earliest settlers of the Western part of Warwick, which was set off in 1741 as the town of Coventry. He made several purchases of large tracts of real estate in Coventry near the Connecticut line, and was the first to establish a saw and grist mill in that section known as Hopkins Hollow, then designated as Rice Mills. He was admitted as a freeman of the colony at Warwick, February 4, 1734. [3]
In May 1747, he was chosen by the general assembly as captain of the Coventry company in the Providence county militia, and served in the French and Indian War.
In 1762, he deeded to his son Ebenezer 110 acres of land. In 1779 to his son Richard 100 acres; in 1781, 120 acres more to Richard; In 1781 to his son John with additional 163 acres including saw and grist mill. [4]
