Biography

Birth

Sarah Rice was born on 3 February 1700, in Sudbury, to Ebenezer Rice (1671-1724) of Sudbury, and Bethiah Williams (1676-1721) of Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[1]

Marriages

Sarah married (1) Joseph Read on 26 November 1723 in Sudbury,[2] and (2) Ebenezer Humphrey on 21 April 1732 in Oxford.[3] Sarah had twelve children, five by Joseph and seven by Ebenezer.

Note: Read surname interpreted as Reed

Sarah's first husband, Joseph Read, was born about 1695 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay, to Thomas Read (III) (1650-1733), of Sudbury, and Mary Goodrich (1650-1724), of Wethersfield, Hartford, Colony of Connecticut (Daniels 661).[4] After they married, Sarah and Joseph stayed in Sudbury for a few more years, where Joseph had purchased land from his father,[5] and that is where they had their first two children. John (1), who died young, was born in 1724 and Bethiah was born in 1725.[6] Joseph and his father then sold the land they owned in Sudbury "...even that tenement where the said Thomas and Joseph Read now dwells...house and a barn together with one-hundred & fifty acres..." for 400 pounds.[7]Sarah released her dower. The family lived at Leicester, Worcester, Massachusetts for a time and there they had two more children. Thomas was born in 1727 and John (2) was born in 1729.[8][9] They then moved to Oxford, Worcester, Massachusetts, where they purchased, for 400 pounds, land including a house and a gristmill (Old Huguenot Mill) (Daniels 194, 303, 304).[4][10] In Oxford they had their last child, Katherine, born in 1731.[11] Joseph passed away on 20 December 1731 in Oxford, reportedly of smallpox (Daniels 661).[12]

Sarah's second husband, Ebenezer Humphrey, was born on 22 Aug 1692 in Woodstock, Windham, Connecticut, to Arthur Humphrey Jr. (1664-1752) and Rachel (1666-).[13] As shown in land deeds pertaining to the estate of the late Joseph Read, Ebenezer was a neighbor to the Reads.[14] He was one of the original proprietors of the town of Oxford in 1713, served as constable and spent several years as a selectman. Sarah and Ebenezer had seven children together (Daniels 552).[4] Rachel was born in 1732 and Arthur was born in 1735.[15][16] Sarah and Mary, who are thought to have died young, were born in 1738 and 1740. Ebenezer was born in 1741 and was followed by Hannah in 1743.[17][18] Abigail, their last child, was born in 1745.[19] Ebenezer passed away on 19 May 1761 in Oxford.[20]

Children

Note: Most of Sarah (Rice) Read Humphrey's children, both those from Joseph and Ebenezer, remained in Oxford or Worcester County, some for generations. However, it is known that after the death of his father, John Read was brought up by Sarah's sister, Abigail (Rice) Bugbee, in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

Research Notes

CONFLATION PLEASE NOTE that due to some misinformation originally published in the late 1800s, and then many times repeated, this profile's Sarah is often confused with another Sarah (Reed) Reed of the Woburn Reed family, who married a different Joseph Reed, also of the Woburn Reed family, in the same time period. The first husband of this profile's Sarah was Joseph Read of the Sudbury Read family. It seems the origin point of the conflation is History of the Reed Family in Europe and America by Whittemore. The WikiTree Space page for this reference warns to use it with "extreme caution" as it is known for "impossible assertions" and inaccurate information, etc. Here are some other references which repeat some of the misinformation from Whittemore, though they do seem to have some other useful information on Sarah's son John Read:

  1. The Town of Roxbury by Francis S. Drake (page 128-129).[22]
  2. Biographical Sketches of Representative Citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by Graves & Steinbarger 1901 (page 193-194). [23]
  3. The Find A Grave memorial for Sarah's son John Read also uses a book repeating Whittemore as a source. [24]

Note: It is well known that the family line of Sudbury used the spelling READ for their surname, having descended from the READE family in England, even though it was often spelled REED or sometimes REEDE in their records. Sarah married Joseph under the spelling REED and their children have this same spelling in many records as well. Joseph was listed as REED in most of his records, besides his death record and some land deeds where he is listed as READ.

Note: George F. Daniels (1820-1897) provides information on many generations of descendants of Sarah (Rice) Read Humphrey in his book History of the Town of Oxford, Massachusetts: with Genealogies and Notes on Persons and Estates published in Oxford, with the cooperation of the town, in 1892.[4] His accounting of the lineage of the Reads, Rices, and Humphreys is in line with all the Vital Records that I have found on the subject so far and is relayed with the context of land exchanges and the general goings-on of the town over the years. This Sarah's profile previously had her correct first husband linked (he now has a new profile Joseph Read), but yesterday I found that his old profile had been merged and conflated with another Joseph Reed of Woburn, again, who was married to a different Sarah (Reed) Reed. These two couples are often conflated due to inaccurate information that seems to have originated with History of the Reed Family in Europe and America by Jacob Whittemore, which has a warning on its WikiTree Space page to only use as a source with "extreme caution" due to "impossible assertions" and generally wrong information, etc. The information in that book was then repeated in a couple other older genealogical books and persists even now.

The reference book which gives the proper lineage information for both of Sarah's husbands and all of her children, which is supported by the actual Vital Records, Land Deeds, Probate Records, etc., is History of the Town of Oxford by Daniels [George F. Daniels. History of the Town of Oxford, Massachusetts: with Genealogies and Notes on Persons and Estates. G.F. Daniels, published in Oxford, with the cooperation of the town. 1892. Retrieved from https://archive.org/details/historyoftownofo00dani/page/n3/mode/2up].

The conflation has been sorted out again and all Vital Records have been cited in their proper profiles. Leaving this comment in case anyone gets merged again later.
