Biography

Marie E. Rich was born in Medford, Massachusetts in the 1930s as the daughter and 1st child of William Lyle and Marie Genevieve (Haviland) Rich. Her younger brother William Edwin, 2nd child of William Lyle and Marie Genevieve, was born on August 30, 1933.

After their parents' divorce in June 1934, Marie E. and her little brother William E. were taken to Isle au Haut, Lincoln (now Knox) County, Maine where they were raised by their paternal grandparents, William Stillman and Emma Hooper (Crockett) Rich, until their early teen years. After death of their paternal grandfather, William Stillman, Marie and William E. (aka "Sonny") relocated to Wilmington, Massachusetts where they lived for a short time with their father, William Lyle and their stepmother, Ivy Ruth (Hammond) Rich.

In summer 1948, Marie E. returned to Maine to Pemaquid Beach, Bristol, Lincoln County, to assist her aunt Rosamond "Rose" (Rich) Kurlovich in the operations of her guest house and cottages known as "The Laughton House." In Pemaquid Beach, across from then Mr. Frank's store, Marie met a young lobsterman, Junior Lane, while she was walking with a friend to and from the store. Junior followed up with Marie with an invitation to a local dance. After recommendation and a "character reference" from her brother-in-law, Leon Small, who had known Junior since he was a little boy, Aunt Rose conceded overturning her previous and emphatic "no." Marie and Junior continued to date.

Marie married Perlie "Junior" Edgar Lane in Bristol, Lincoln, Maine on January 24, 1949. They continued to reside in New Harbor, Bristol, Lincoln County, Maine where they had three daughters: Rose Marie aka Rosa, Bonnie Flora, and Brenda Holly. Perlie passed away on December 26, 2002 in Damariscotta, Maine, leaving Marie a widow.
