Research Notes

Two Rich family researchers that provided some of Information for these profiles. Both researches believe that the Marblehead Rich family, has no connection to the other MA Rich families. Thus it is a small leap think all the Richs in Marblehead are the same family. The family seem to baptize boys as Jonathan, then refer to one of them as John. This is repeated at Mount Desert as well. Lacking birth records, this is a theory only. Land records imply a family connection. The 1 Feb 1773 probate record for Jonathan & Phebe Rich supply the names of four children: Jonathan Rich eldest son [administrator of the probate], John Rich, Mary Mer, and Elizabeth Thrasher.

John Rich as Jonathan Rich of Mount Desert, formally of Marblehead deeds his Marblehead Property to Mary Merritt, widow of Marblehead, and daughter Mary Rich, his sister-in-law, [now widow?] of Jonathan Rich of Marblehead, deed dated 2 May 1787. Later Jonathan/John Rich transfers property to Mary Rich's 2nd husband, Mason Harris.

Thanks for the family tree. It gives a source for the marriage.

The attached parents appear to be in error, as Jonathan Rich died prior to 2 May 1787.

The second Jonathan,or John Rich deeded his Marblehead land & house to Mary Merrit, widow, [of Samuel Merritt and her daughter Mary Rich widow of Jonathan Rich, for their lifetimes. Does this action imply they are family?
