Richard was born about 1854. He passed away before 1908. Would have been aged 54 in 1908.

Marriage Register NZ BDM 1879/81 Registry Office Thames Probate records from Archway New Zealand. Police search in New Zealand and Australia failed to discover his whereabouts, his wife applied for leave to record his death for insurance purposes. There were rumours he sailed to Australia on the SS Warrimoo but this was not verified in spite of extensive searches. He had an aunt 'Mrs Phillips' in Bendigo who was questioned and had no knowledge of him being there. (Mrs Jno Phillips) Tattoos of his initials RR and index finger of right hand missing were identifying features used in the search. Arrowtown - a Mrs Graham said her husband kept the store at Skippers Reef and there had been a man there known as 'Double Dick'. Described as "High, steel grey eyes; large nose, dark hair starting to grey; clean shaved except brown mustache mixed with grey; scar on corner of left eye; large scar on one knee'; bald patches on head, peculiar walk, occupation Miner'. Left Thames on 21 Feb 1908 and is supposed to have gone to Wellington in company of a very tall, fair haired bartender and possibly left via SS Zealandia 25 Feb 1908. Not verified by witnesses who were interviewed.

Richard was born in Cornwall in 1855 and came to NZ c.1870 with his parents Richard and Emily Gilbert. He married Mary Ann Cusack at Thames Jan 22 1879 in a civil ceremony. At the time of marriage Richard was miner and Mary Ann a domestic servant.

Freeholders New Zealand Oct 1882 listed as a publican at Grahamstown, Thames and had 9 acres worth 90 pounds. On electoral rolls 1871-1874 his address is 'The George Hotel' in Pollen Street, Thames.
