Biography

Calvin was born 17 July 1790 in Swanzey Township, New Hampshire[1]. He was the son of Wyman and Ruth Richardson. He was the fifth of his parents dozen children. Swanzey was (and is) a farming community in the SW corner of the state.

He married Nancy Streeter on 21 November 1810 in Richmond, the next community to the south of Swanzey, just inside the New Hampshire/Massachusetts state line[2]. In the Census of the same year, Calvin and Nancy are shown as living in Marlow, 12 miles north of Swanzey[3].

Their first Child, Calvin Jr., was born in 1812, presumably in New Hampshire.

In the War of 1812, Calvin may have served as a private in one of two different New York State militia regiments: the 16th or the 18th[4]. See research notes.

Their second child, George, was born in 1816 in Richmond, but sometime after the family moved Quebec, Canada where their remaining children, Laura and William were born.

The next record for Calvin and Nancy is the US 1860 Census where he is recorded as living with Nancy in Wolcott, Vermont[5]. Wolcott was a small farming community near the Canadian border. He was listed as a farmer, aged 70, with the farm valued at $500 and personal assets of $200.

Nancy died on 27 January 1866 while at her son, Calvin's house in South Stukely, Quebec. She was buried in the Anglican cemetery there[6].

In 1870, Calvin was living with his son William's family in Elmore, the next village over from Wolcott[7].

Calvin died 12 July 1871 in Wolcott, a week before his 81st birthday. The cause of death was registered as 'paralysis'[8]. He was buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Wolcott[9].

Research Notes

There is another Calvin Richardson, born in 1784, also in New Hampshire. He also married in 1810 but to Mindwell Barret. The Calvin Richardson who is recorded in US censuses from 1820 to 1850 as living in Mount Holly, Vermont, is this other Calvin Richardson. We know this because the 1850 census lists his wife's name as Mindwell, not Nancy. It is also likely that this is the Calvin who fought in the War of 1812, though it may be that both fought as there are two entries.
