He was a Confederate Soldier 42nd Infantry Regiment VA TROOPS
He was the Great Grand Son of Gen. Joseph Martin of Henry County, VA. Jesse was ready to respond to the call in 1861. He was a lieutenant in one of the first companies that left Henry County, VA. under Capt. S. J. Mullins, the 42nd Virginia Regiment, and he was a Major before he was done.
He enlisted as a Private on 5 May 1861 at age 23 in Ridgeway, Henry County, Va. He was in Warm Springs Hospital on 2 Sept. 1861. Absent thru 5 Dec. 1861. Present 10 Feb. 1862. He was wounded in August 1862 at Cedar Run. Home on sick leave from 15 Aug. 1862 - 31 Oct. 1862. Present 8 Dec. 1862.
He was wounded four times and badly at the battle of Gettysburg, PA. and died from the wounds he received at Fort Stedman in Petersburg, VA. on 6 May, 1865.
He was mortally wounded at Fort Stedman a few days before General Lees' surrender and died on the 6th of May, one month after, at the age of 28.
