Elizabeth Richardson is conjectured to have been born in 1834 in Wicklow County, Ireland. Her parents were Maria Bowen and Thomas Richardson, as recorded on the Victoria Births Death and Marriages register entry for her death[1].
Elizabeth is conjectured to have emigrated to Australia on the ship Sir Robert Sale 741 tons, Master: William Loder, sailed from Plymouth 1 Apr 1852, arrived Point Henry Geeelong, Victoria 5 Jul 1852, 95 days. The Nominal List of passengers, and the Disposal List recorded the following information: "No. 292, Name: Richardson, Elizabeth. Calling: Dairymaid. Native county: Wicklow. Religious Denomination: Ch of Engd. Read or Write: both. Age: 18. By whome engaged: Rev. A. Love, Manse. Wages: £20 Term: 3 mos. With or without Rations: with"[2]. Elizabeth was landed on 8 Jul with 42 other unmarried women, some of whom were available for "hire"[3].
After about five months, Elizabeth, aged 18 years, married George Stewart, aged 24 years at the end of 1852[4]. The marriage was registered in the Lorne District.
They went on to have twelve children between 1854 and 1877 (listed on George's profile)
Elizabeth died on 16 Dec 1929[1] in the guesthouse Gracedale, Lorne, Victoria[5][6]. Her memorial notices in 1930 mention her daughter Isobell Clissold, whose family managed (possibly owned) the old guesthouse.
The identity of the woman, Elizabeth Richardson who arrived in Geelong in June 1852 has not been definitively ascertained. That she married George Stewart very shortly after is similarly uncertain. However, in that year fewer than 3100 marriages were officially registered in Victoria, Elizabeth and George's marriage is 3015 in the Register, suggesting that their marriage was registered late in 1852. The creator of the profile added to George's profile that they were married 28 Dec 1852. No source is cited, so it is presumed that the creator had sighted the full marriage certificate. If this is so, it suggests that Elizabeth was released from her commitment to Rev. A. Love and married George in Lorne late in 1852.
Wicklow is a County in Ireland immediately south of County Dublin. Elizabeth may have been born in the civil parish of Rathdrum.
The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Census Search Forms for the 1841 and 1851 censuses do not include returns for Wicklow County [7].
