Ann seems to have been illegitimately born in Atherstone, Warwickshire to Eliza Richardson and baptised on the fourth of December, 1831.[1] Her father could be 'Samuel'[2] or 'William'[3] or something else entirely, so is currently uncertain.
She married Philip Griffiths at St Bartholomew's, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England on the 26th of July, 1853.[4]
Their first child, Joseph, was born in Kings Norton in either late 1854 or early 1855[5] and baptised at St Thomas' church, Birmingham on the 28th of January, 1855[6]. Their second child was John Henry Griffiths. John was born on the 14th of September, 1855, baptised on the 7th of October of that same year,[7] but died aged seven months[8] during the June Quarter[9]. During these early years of their marriage the Ann, Philip and their family lived on Rushton Street, Birmingham.[6][7] Shortly after their younger son's death, Ann, Philip and their surviving son boarded the Herald which set sail on the 15th of May, 1856 and arrived in New South Wales on the 22nd of August that same year.[2].
In New South Wales, the Griffiths family started out based in the Newcastle region. Their third child - and first daughter - Elizabeth was born in Raymond Terrace in 1857[8], and the continuation of the family tracks their journey from Raymond Terrace to Elsmore with Henry (1860)[10] and Phillip (1860)[11] both born in the Patrick's Plain (now Singleton) region, Minney (1863) born in the Maitland region[12], William (1865) in Murrurundi[13], Frederick (1867) back in Patrick's Plain[14], Emily (1869) in the Warialda district[15] and their final child, Jane (1875) being born in the Inverell Region[16] where the family finally settled. There was allegedly one other daughter, but at this time (8 October, 2016) she has not yet been identified and can only be recognised as having lived due to transcriptions of Ann and Philip's death certificates. If she existed it can be presumed that she was born after 1857 and died previous to 1894.
1894 was noted as a bitterly cold winter in the Inverell district. The Griffiths family was particularly hard hit, with four members struck with pneumonia and influenza: Death has been busy in one family at Elsmore. Miss Jane Griffiths, daughter of Mr. P. Griffiths, a very old resident, who had been suffering from heart disease for some years, expired of pneumonia on Saturday night. Her mother, Mrs. Griffiths, also died from influenza, while the father is also very in with the same complaint. Another daugher, Mrs. Smith, is also very unwell.[17]
Ann Griffiths died on the 15th of July, 1894.[18]
