Edwin and Susan had only one child, Emily, who died in infancy. [4]
As John's older siblings were growing up, there was a time when some of the older siblings wed and had children of their own. His eldest sister, Prudence Jane, married Albert Cooper in 1899. [5] Prudence Jane and Albert eventually had six children over the next decade. [6]
Within the year, his older brother, George Leopold, married Harriett Dobson in 1911.[7]They had a child, George Edwin William who arrived in the following year. [8]George's family grew in 1913 with the birth of Henry King Riche, named for their Uncle, and their father's youngest brother, who died in 1899. [9]
John Albert Riche married Elsie Jones in 1913[10] in the years leading up to the war. John used the name James[11] instead of John on the wedding license. [12]Edwin was listed on the license as well, as a cartage foreman, while "James" was listed as a carriage cleaner.
As an aside, John may have been known informally as 'James' by family as seen on brother Frederic's War Records. James is listed in a handwritten notation, as a younger brother to Frederic. [13]
John and Elsie had a baby boy, named James John Albert.[14] He was born on 16 Jan 1914 and baptised at St. Stephen, Bow, London, England on 22 Feb 1914.
[15][16]
John served in World War I. John Albert signed up to serve on 14 Aug 1915 with the Royal Field Artillery as a gunner. John served in various regiments of the Royal Field Artillery throughout the war.[17][18][19]
John had served in England before going to India, where he developed Malaria. He was sent home to recover in hospital. He did serve, in Malta and for a limited time in England before being discharged in July 1917, for being medically unfit. He had Tuberculosis [20]Included in his war records is the use of his chosen name James on certain war sheets. [21]
After the war, John's older sister died in 1919. [22]
John's father, Edwin William Riche, died in 1927 in Cambridge, England. [23]
John was buried 2 Oct 1936 in the City of London and Tower Hamlets, with his mother and older brother Frederic who also served in WWI and died of Tuberculosis. [25]
His wife, Elsie was also buried here in 1983. Their son James died in 1984. There is no mention of his having a family, at this time.
