Albert was born in 1859[1] in West Newton, Norfolk, England, where he lived with his parents, Robert Riches and Sarah Rose.[2][3] In 1881 Albert worked as a groom;[4] he was a general labourer in 1891.[5]
At the time of the 1901 census Albert boarded with the Woodhouse family in West Newton, while he worked as a carpenter's labourer.[6]
