According to one source, Josiah Richmond was born circa 1697, probably in Taunton, Massachusetts. His parents were Edward and Mary Richmond.[1] From another source, his birth -- to Edward and Mary Richmond -- was likely before 1696 (based on the date of his first marriage). This source goes on to say that his parentage is known through a deed of October 16, 1727 in which his father, Edward Richmond, deeded land to son, Josiah. That Edward Richmond was his father is confirmed through his father's will in which Edward bequeathed the land where Josiah lived in Middleborough to son Josiah.[2] Other sources show the same father, but give his mother's name as Mercy _____, and list his birth year in 1697, at Taunton (with no expressed uncertainty).[3][4] See his father's profile, Edward Richmond for explanation and sources showing that his mother's name was Mary rather than Mercy.

Josiah was mentioned as a blacksmith, and evidently had great physical strength.[4] He moved to Middleborough between 16 October 1727, when his father deeded him fifty acres of land, and February 2, 1727/8 when a deed described him as being of Middleborough.[5]

Josiah married (1) Mehitable Deane, daughter of Benjamin Deane and Sarah Williams, probably a few years before 2 February 1722/23. (No marriage place was specified.)[1] From another source, their marriage took place as early as 1718 (based on the probable date of birth of their first child). Mehitable's father, Benjamin Deane of Taunton, named Mehitable Richmond in his will dated Feb 2, 1722/3.[2]

Josiah Richmond married (2) Lydia (Eddy) Crocker, daughter of Jabez Eddy and Mary Rickard, on 6 February 1745/46 at Middleborough, Plymouth, Province of Massachusetts Bay. [1] Her first husband had been Theophilus Crocker,[4] who she had married at Plympton, Massachusetts, 19 Nov 1730.[2]

Josiah's known children with wife, Mehitable,[2] all born in Middleborough, were:[3]

  1. Mary Richmond, b probably ca 1719 based on age 82 on 20 October 1801 when she died as widow Mary Leonard; m Philip Leonard 6 Jan 1737/8 (b 1718[1])
  2. Josiah Richmond, b prob 1718-1722 based on 9 June 1743 marriage to Elizabeth Smith (b 1721, d 1785[1])
  3. Gershom Richmond, b prob 1722-1726 based on 30 July 1747 marriage to Phebe Richmond (b 1723[1])
  4. Mercy Richmond, b prob 1726-1729 based on 3 Dec 1747 marriage to Benjamin Hackett (b 1741[1])
  5. George Richmond, b prob 1726-1730 based on 5 Oct 1751 marriage to Hannah Caswell (b 1725; d after Oct 1778[1])
  6. Benjamin Richmond, b ca 1728 based on dying at age 75 on 26 Feb 1803; m 30 Apr 1751 Silence Dean (b 1727[1])
  7. Lemuel Richmond, b ca 1733 (b 1733[1])
  8. Miriam Richmond, b ca 1733 based on possible identification as the Miriam Ray, wife of Samuel, who died 2 Nov 1814, age 81; married (1) Elisha Walker and (2) Samuel Ray (b 1733[1])
  9. Ephraim Richmond, b prob 1741-1745 based on 11 Jan 1766 marriage to Anne Dean (b 12 Feb 1735[1])
  10. Eleazar Richmond, b prob 1740-1744 based on 5 Dec 1765 marriage to Deborah Barrows (b 27 Feb 1737[1])
  11. Zeriah Richmond; m Amaziah Richmond by 1761; d before Dec 1764. Given the uncertainty of her birth year, she may either be a daughter of Mehitable (Dean) Richmond or Lydia (Eddy) (Crocker) Richmond. (b 1741[1])
  • Mehitable, died young, is not listed by the Mayflower Society[2] or the Thomas Rogers Society[1] but is shown in two other sources, without further citations.[4][3]

Josiah Richmond died on 30 January 1763 at Middleborough, Massachusetts.[2][1] Another source reports the same death year, but with the location of Taunton, Massachusetts.[4] In his will dated 26 January 1762, which was probated 5 April 1763, he named his wife Lydia, daughters Mary (Richmond) Leonard, Mary [Mercy] (Richmond) Hackett, Miriam (Richmond) Walker and Zeriah Richmond, and sons Josiah Richmond, Lemuel Richardson, Gershom Richmond, Benjamin Richmond, George Richmond, Ephraim Richmond, and Eleazar Richmond.[2] His estate was inventoried 21 March 1763, and was comprised of only books, clothing and real estate valued at £43.[6]

Todd, You may add the child Ephraim to these parents. He's on the list of their children, but the profile has not been created. I think the birth may be wrong. Isn't that the birth date for his wife?

Looks great. My only comment is that the daughter Mehitable is not given in the "Silver book." Should she be included, if not recognized? Her two sources, of course, don't tell us what their sources are, and I find none.
