Biography

Edward Richmond,[1] was born about 1695 or 1696, based on his age at death. His father and mother were Edward Richmond and his wife Mary. The father Edward's 1738 will left to his son Edward land in Taunton, next to the land he was then living on.[2]

Edward married twice. His first marriage about 1715 was to Elizabeth Deane. Her father Benjamin Deane called his daughter Elizabeth Richmond in his will dated 2 Feb 1722/3. Elizabeth died by Nov 1750.[1]

Deacon Edward Richmond married again, to Mrs. Elizabeth (Hodges) (Shaw) Sampson, 6 Nov 1750 in Middleborough.[1] Born about 1702, she was the daughter of Henry and Esther (Gallop) Hodges, and widow of both Samuel Shaw of Raynham and Isaac Samson. She died in 1782 in her 81st year.[1]

3 Jan 1753 Edward Richmond of Taunton, gentleman, sold for £100 "Paid By my Son Edward Richmond Junr of Taunton," husbandman, about 21 acres in a place known as Titicut. It was signed by Edward and wife Elizabeth and acknowledged by Edward 23 Oct 1765[3]

Deacon Edward Richmond died at Taunton 16 Feb 1771 in his 75th year.[4]

Edward's will was dated 13 Oct 1767 and probated 12 March 1771. He named his wife Elizabeth, son Isaac Richmond (executor), son Elijah Richmond, daughters Elizabeth Haskins, Prudence Hackett, Abigail Hall, Bathsheba Richmond and Susanna Richmond.[5]

Children of Edward Richmond. Seven by Elizabeth Deane. The last Susanna is attributed ot Elizabeth Hodges, but may be the daughter of Elizabeth Deane.[1]

  8. Susanna Richmond b. probably 1750-53. She could be the daughter of the first wife or the second wife. d. 9 Jun 1771
  • There is no documenttary evidence for a son Israel Richmond who is said to have drowned at age 16
