Biography

Lemuel6 Richmond (Lemuel*, Josiah*, Edward3, John2, John1), b. Taunton, Oct. 27, 1771 ; d. Bd., Apr. 18, 1864; m. Bd., Feb. 24, 1805, Joanna, dau. Ephriam and Rhoda (Whitcomb) Briggs, b. Bd., Mch. 13, 1787; d. Bd., Oct. 16, 1867. Held every town office and was High Bailiff of Windsor Co., Maj. in the militia of Vt. "Made the one dollar he inherited at the age of twenty-one increase forty thousand fold." He was a hatter as well as a farmer.

As of about 1927, Newton wrote that "The Major Lemuel Richmond place is the house, now falling down, in Barnard upper village opposite the Gale brick house. Nearly opposite this house in the meadow may be seen the foundations of the hat factory belonging to Major Lemuel Richmond."[1]

I. Rollin, born Barnard, July 1, 1806; m. (1), Aug. 6, 1832, Mary Marsh of Be., b. Nov. 8, 1806; d. Oct. 29, 1842; m. (2), Mary Almira , b. Windsor, Aug. 12, 1814. A very successful merchant and farmer, honored with all the important town offices and a leading man in the community. Lived in Barnard a part of his life.

(a) George Nelson Babbitt, b. Bd., July 9, 1833; d. Aug. 9, 1849.
(b) Rollin Marsh, b. Bd., Apr. 29, 1835. Graduate of U. V. M., 1857. Died at St. Louis, Mo.

II. Asa Whitcomb, b. Barnard, March 18, 1808; d. Kenosha, Wis., Feb. 1, 1856; m. Sept. 2, 1830, Caroline C. Cook of Bd., b. 1811 ; d. May 7, 1860. Went West and finally settled in Kenosha. Was a merchant (a) Francese Adeline, b. Bd., Mch. 25, 1833 ; d. Sept. 9, 1836. Six other ch., none of whom were b. in Barnard.

III. Alaphal, born Barnard, Apr. 9, 1810; d. Bd., Nov. 1, 1810.

IV. Joanna Raymond, b. Bd., Aug. 7, 1811; m. Loring S. Wins- low.

V. Rhoda Briggs, b. Bd., Nov. 8, 1814; m. Daniel Aikens.

VI. Elvira Jennett, b. Bd., Apr. 2, 1817; m. Lucian Blackmer.

VII. Lemuel Carlton, b. Bd., Oct. 25, 1819; m. Oct. 15, 1850, Jane Ann, dau. Dr. Lemuel and Ruth Emm (Hinman) Richmond, b. Derby, Sept. 19, 1830. He held most of the town offices.

Richmond-3935 and Richmond-1514 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Same birth place. Biographical details (in bio of Richmond-3935 and in data section for the other two profiles) of his wife and children match up.

NB: This man was named Lemuel, not Leonard, and he was born in 1771, not 1780. The History of Barnard (where he lived as a prominent citizen) is more likely to be on the mark than the Holllister family genealogy in which he is described in passing as an in-law.
