Biography

Mary was born in 1864 in Silver Hill in Wetzel County, West Virginia, the daughter of Charles Jefferson Richmond and Mariah Jane Cain. When she was 19 years old in 1883, she married David Frederick Baker in Marshall County, WV. They moved to Nebraska where they had two children together before David died in 1890. Mary must have returned soon thereafter to West Virginia because she delivered a last child with David there. She remarried to a German immigrant and farmer Gottleib Cashner in about 1894. She had two more children together with Gottleib before he passed away in 1896. She married a third time to the recently widowed James Fitz Randolph in 1902, joining him in Salem, WV where he had a store and did house painting. James and Mary had two more children there. James died in 1916 and Mary initially stayed in Salem. By the time of the 1930 census, she was living with her daughter Iva's family in Pittsburgh, PA, and later in 1940, she was living with her daughter Virtue's family in Zanesville, Ohio. She passed away in 1949 in a rest home in Dudley, OH and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Zanesville, OH.

Surname note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy (referenced below) assumes this to be the case when listing the children in both the family in which James is a child and the one in which he is the father. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph. Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed! Examples:

  • In the marriage bond for his father's first marriage, John is recorded as John L. Fitz Randolph, and signs it as 'John L. Fitz randolph' with a clear space between Fitz and randolph
  • In the 1840, 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, his father is recorded as John L F Randolph. And similarly in his second and third marriage records
  • In the 1870 census, all family members use the F initial.
