Biography

James was born about 1775. He passed away in 1858.

The Family Tree Of Samuel and Sarah Richmond. A private publication of the family tree contains a typed copy of 'The Last Will and Testament of James Richmond' which follows:

In the Name of God Amen

I, James Richmond of Trimble County, Kentucky, being very old and in bad health but of sound mind and knowing the certainty of death do make this my last will and testament in the words following, viz.

First, I wish my body to be decently buried.

Second, I wish all my debts be promptly paid

Third, I give John Richmond, William Richmond, James Richmond, Henry Richmond my sons and the children of my deceased son Valentine Richmond each the sum of five dollars except Henry Richmond: to him I give one dollar and the children of Valentine Richmond I give five dollars to be divided among them

Fourth, I give all the balance of my property land and money to my only daughter Rebecca Crafton in consideration that she is to maintain me decently during my life, and in the event she should die before I do, then her husband Frederick Crafton or his children should be bound hereby to keep and maintain me free of any other charge

Lastly, I appoint Frederick Crafton executor of this my last will hereby revoking all other as witness by my hand and seal this 5th of Narch 1858

Richmond

It is said that the Richmond family was a noble English family hundreds of years old, established by a Norman who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. They are said to have resided in Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, England.

Early immigrants came to America in 1635 and settled in The Taunton, Massachusetts and the Rhode Island areas.

James Henry “Clete” Richmond was born in 1775 in Maryland and he lived in Virginia before moving to Kentucky. He was married to Sarah Sally Rowlett in 1794. Sarah was born in 1767 in Virginia. She died September 1855 of consumption in Trimble County, Kentucky.

In James’ will which was dated March 05, 1858, he mentions 5 sons and a daughter. In 1860 he lived with his daughter Rebecca Crafton. He died circa 1870/71.

James Richmond and Sarah Sally Rowlett children were:

·John was born in 1798/99 in Virginia. He died in 1882 in Trimble County, Kentucky. John was married on June 04, 1825 to Alice “Ally” Robins in Oldham County, Kentucky. ·Valentine “Felt” was born in 1801 in Virginia. He died in Trimble County, Kentucky in August of 1849 of a fever. Valentine was married on March 07, 1821 to Rachel Ferguson; she was the daughter of Kinder and Mary Ann (Robbins) Ferguson. ·James was born in 1804 in Virginia? He was married on November 16, 1840 to Eliza Jane Vest in Scott County, Indiana. ·Henry was born in 1805 in Virginia. He was mentally retarded. ·William was born in 1811 in Kentucky. He died in 1894/1900. Henry was married on April 10, 1832 to Margaret Ferguson the daughter o Kinder and Mary Ann Ferguson. ·Rebecca was born in 1811 in Kentucky. She died June 1891. Rebecca was married April 21, 1832 to Frederick Crafton in Oldham County, Kentucky.

The children of Valentine and Rachel (Ferguson) Richmond were: ·Nancy Elizabeth was born in December of 1822. She died in 1911. Nancy was married on March 24, 1855 to David Bell. ·Nathan was born in 1826. ·Mary Ann was born in 1827. She was married 1st to a Mr. Ezra Boldery on November 26, 1845. Mary Ann was married 2nd to a Mr. Williams Robbins on December 25, 1861. ·Dorothy J. was born in 1830. Valentine and Rachel Richmond adopted Dorothy. She was married on November 06, 1853 in Trimble County, Kentucky to Silas Richmond the son of John and Alice Richmond. ·James was born in 1832. ·Margaret was born in 1836. ·Agnes A. was born in 1839. Agnes was married to Oliver Perry Harmon on January 15, 1861. ·Andrew Jackson “Pete” was born in December of 1840. He died April 22, 1934. He was married to Elizabeth Frances Jones on June 17, 1867. ·Possible daughter: Sarah A. born in 1831 in Kentucky. She was married on February 23, 1858 in Scott County, Indiana to Adam McCutcheon. In the 1860 census of Johnson County, Indiana, Sarah lived next door to Kinder and Mary Ann Ferguson.
