Research Notes

Charles Richman

The only evidence of a son Charles Richman is in the will of Anthony Cook (son of John Cook of Marlborough and hence the brother in law of John Richman of Brinkworth) of 1629.[7]

My said Ex'tor shall out of the first money which he shall receive from Sir John Danvers or Thos. White of Knighton farm, Wilts, gent. pay or cause to be paid unto my nephew Charles Richman the sum of 100 li to repair his decaied fortunes, which sum of 100 Ii I do give and bequeath to the said Charles Richman.

H I Richmond speculated as follows:[7]

"If he made his will when away from relatives and very ill Charles might have been written by accident for perhaps John. There were so many Johns in the Cook and Richmond families one would almost expect a John among the offspring of John Richmond and Mary Cook. This might be the John who went to Taunton, Mass. as he could have been a bro. of Henry Richmond instead of a son. However with the few facts at our command we can only conjecture."

A Daughter?

A Mary Richmond, daughter of John Richmond, was baptised on 07 Aug 1591 at Malmesbury, Wiltshire.[8] Given the proximity of Malmesbury and Brinkworth, perhaps this was the daughter of John Richmond of Brinkworth who married a Gynes?

Gentleman

John Richman was referred to as a Gent in his will of 1625. Does this indicate he was of an armigerous family? Here we have conflicting evidence:

  • There is no record of this family in the Wiltshire Visitations.
  • His father and grandfather were referred to as Yeomen.
  • There were arms connected with his granddaughter Lucy (Richmond) Wildman as follows:
Arms on the monument to John Wildman and Lucy (Richman) Wildman at Shrivenham, Berkshire:[9]
Or, on a pale az. 3 bezants [Wildman]
Or, on a bend engrailed gules 3 cross crosslets or. [Richmond]
