Robert Leroy Rickard

Robert L. Rickard, age 76, of Toronto, South Dakota, died Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at the Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 16, 2003, at St. Pauls Catholic Church in White, South Dakota, with interment at Lakeview Cemetery in Clear Lake, South Dakota. Memorials may be designated for St. Pauls Catholic Church.

Robert Leroy Rickard was born June 21, 1927, at rural Gary, South Dakota, to Harry B. and Elizabeth (Thompson) Rickard. He died Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at the Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

Bob attended country school and high school at Gary. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 until 1953 during the Korean War. On December 28, 1954, he married Sylvia Maye Van Erdewyk at St. Peters Catholic Church in Gary. Bob farmed in the Gary and Brandt area from 1954 until 1972. He worked for Harvest States Elevator from 1972 until December 1984, and at SDSU from 1985 until 1993.

Bob was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church in White; the American Legion Post No. 109 of Gary, Brandt Senior Citizens, and Hendricks Senior Citizens. He served on the Gary School Board. His interests included gardening, playing cards, and reading western novels.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Sylvia Rickard, of Toronto; four children: Larry (Judy) Rickard and their children Nathan and Megan, of Brookings; Lisa (Paul) Johnson and their children Jennifer, Jay, and Jill; of Hurley, South Dakota; Mark (Twyla) Rickard and their children Heather and Matthew, of Zumbrota, Minnesota; and Bryan (Chandra) Rickard and their children Robert (Cody) and Erin of Gilbert, Arizona; a sister, Lillian Hults, of Ortonville, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Andrew William Rickard.
