Biography

Buckinghamshire (historic flag)
George Rickard was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

Unlike his siblings, George does not appear in the transcript of the Wingrave parish church baptismal register. He is recorded, however, in each of the 10-yearly censuses for Wingrave, from 1841 to 1911. They show his age as 22 in 1851, 33 in 1861, 43 in 1871, 52 in 1881, and so on, to 83 in 1911. In the 1841 and 1851 censuses he resided with his parents, William and Ann Rickard.

Birth date estimated from census data.

Alive on 2 Apr 1911, the night of the census.

Evidence that William Rickard of Grandborough [Rickard-318] was the father of George Rickard [Rickard-1011] :

1. The 1841 census recorded the following persons in a house at Windmill Street, Wingrave, Buckinghamshire: William Rickard (55), Ann Rickard (42), Sarah Rickard (18), George Rickard (12), Jane Rickard (10), Joseph Rickard (8), Roda Rickard (5) & Elizabeth Rickard (11 mths), all born in Buckinghamshire. This census did not record relationships, or actual places of birth.

2. The 1851 census recorded the following persons in a house at Nap End, Wingrave: William Rickard (66), born Grandborough; his wife Ann (51); their unmarried sons George (22) and Joseph (18); and daughters Rhoda (16) and Elizabeth (11). All the occupants except William were born at Wingrave.

3. The 1861 census shows George (35) and Joseph (28) living in neighbouring cottages at Wingrave, with their respective wives and children. In a separate dwelling in Wingrave are Ann Rickard (63), a widow and a pauper, together with her daughter Elizabeth Rickard (29) and grandson William Dell (6). The inference is that William Rickard of Grandborough has died before the census date.

Conclusion: In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, Rickard-1011 was the son of Rickard-318.

The transcript of an entry in the marriage register of the Church of St Peter & St Paul, Wingrave, confirms George's parentage:

'5 Aug 1851 George X RICKARD, full age, bachelor, Bricklayer of Wingrave, son of William Rickard, Bricklayer [to] Ellen X GURNEY, 20, spinster of Wingrave, daughter of Joseph Gurney, Labourer. Witnesses: J Barefoot, W Barefoot'.

[The above, somewhat pedantic, note was in anticipation of consideration of a merge between Rickard-1011 and Rickard-199, since achieved.]
