Biography

Baptised at Whitchurch parish church on 24 Dec 1809 as "Phillis daughter of Thomas and Ann Rickard".

Buried at Whitchurch on 23 Oct 1884 as "Phyllis Rickard aged 75 of Whitchurch".

Phyllis had three children who were all baptised in Whitchurch:
"17 Sep 1833 Thomas Cheshire illegitimate son of Phillis RICKARD of Whitchurch, single woman, private baptism, received into the Church 13 Oct 1833";
"29 Jun 1845 Mary Ann illegitimate daughter of Phyllis RICKARD of Whitchurch, Grocer";
"29 Jun 1845 Albert Cheshire illegitimate son of Phyllis RICKARD of Whitchurch, Grocer".

At the time of the 1841 census Phyllis's son Thomas, aged 6, was residing with his uncle and aunt, shoemaker Thomas Reeves (40) and Mary Ann (Rickard) Reeves (35), and Thomas Reeves (20). In a separate dwelling were a grocer, James Cleaver (55) and Philis Rickard (30), a servant.

Ten years later, Thomas Rickard (17) was living with his mother Philis Rickard (41), a grocer. There is no trace in the Whitchurch census of 1851 of James Cleaver, who may have died before that event, and possibly before the baptism of Phyllis's two younger children.

Her younger children had both died before the 1851 census: Mary Ann Rickard, aged two months, was buried on 12 Aug 1845; and Albert Cheshire Rickard, aged five years, was buried on 3 Feb 1851. They were probably twins.

On 10 Nov 1857 Thomas Cheshire Rickard, grocer, married Jane Griffin of Whitchurch, and their firstborn child was named Albert Cheshire Rickard.
