As a boy Garnet began judging for the Junior Farmers' Club. This lead to him establishing seed-cleaning and fertilizer-blending plants. As a result of his work, Garnet won international prizes for seed grain and would later become a leader in the field of agriculture, active in both societies and education.
On September 6, 1941, he married Annabelle Erskine Hendry, at the United Church, Newcastle, Durham, Ontario, Canada.[1]
He was elected Warden of the united counties of Northumberland and Durham, and would become the first mayor of the Town of Newcastle in 1973.
Garnet was also an active Mason, initiated in the Durham Lodge No. 66, Newcastle in 1942. Other ranks and positions achieved were Worshipful Master (1952), Grand Junior Warden (1968-1969), and member of the Board of General Purposes (1973-1978). [2]
Garnet Baker Rickard, C.M., was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada on December 20, 1982, and invested on April 20, 1983. This honour recognizes outstanding contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity.[3]
Garnet Baker Rickard died suddenly, on June 23, 1994.
A recreation complex in Clarington (a successor community to Newcastle) has been named in hounour of Rickard.[4]
