Barzella was born in 1834, the son of Drury Ricketts and Judea Jones.
In 1850, he and his family were living in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. He was the oldest of 8 children in the household, and the census taker mistakenly listed him as a daughter.[1]
He married Paralee McDuffee in Tishomingo County, Mississippi on 20 Aug 1859. His bondsman was E. A. Ricketts, presumably his brother Ephriam.[2]
Barzella enlisted in the Union Army on 20 Jan 1863 in Corinth, Mississippi for a period of 1 year. He joined Co. C of the 1st Regiment of the Alabama Cavalry. He was appointed Corporal on 10 Apr 1863, and Sargent on 19 Dec 1863. His physical description says he was 5' 6-1/2" tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. Before enlisting, he worked as a farmer.[3]
Still looking for this family in the 1860 Census -- with their unusual given names, they were often misspelled.
In 1870, Barzella was listed as "Byzella," and Paralee was using the name "Polly." They were living in Lauderdale County, Tennessee, and Barzella was working as a farm laborer. Their three children were Jasper, William and Lettie.[4]
