Biography

Branch Rickey is Notable.

Branch Rickey was a Major League Baseball executive (Brooklyn Dodgers team owner) who was an instrumental force in breaking the color barrier that existed in professional baseball in the United States of America. This policy was established circa 1887 and existed until 1947, when Branch promoted Jackie Robinson to the Dodgers roster.[1]

Wesley Branch Rickey

While many information sources on Branch Rickey have his birth date as December 20, 1881, and his birthplace as either Stockdale, Ohio or Portsmouth, Ohio, the digitized copy of his birth record in the "Record of Births in Scioto County, Ohio, for the Year Ending March 31, 1882 " records the birth of Wesley Branch Rickey as having occurred on November 20, 1881, in Madison Township, Scioto County, Ohio, to J. F. Rickey and Emma Brown of Rush Township (Scioto County, Ohio). The record also indicates that this data was provided by the parents themselves.[2]

In 1900, Branch lived with his parents, 2 brothers (Orla and Frank), sister-in-law (Winona "Winnie" Staten), and niece (Thelma) on the Rickey family farm in Valley Township in Scioto County. Although Branch had been unemployed for 6 (of the last 12?) months, he had been employed off the farm as a teacher.[3]

On May 31, 1906, in Scioto County, Ohio, Branch married Jane Moulton, daughter of Mary Celia Smith and Chandler Julius Moulton.[4] The Rickeys had at least 7 children: one child was an unnamed daughter who was born prematurely on January (?) 6, 1909, in Delaware, Ohio, and passed away a few hours after birth.[5].

Another child of Branch and Jane's was son Wesley Branch Rickey, Jr., who was born in 1914 and passed away in 1961. Known as Branch, Jr., he worked independently and alongside his father on the business management side of professional baseball.[6]

Branch and Jane had at least 5[6] more daughters: Mary Emily Rickey (married surname: Eckler) was born in 1913 and passed away in 2005; Jane Rickey was born circa 1917 in Missouri, but little else is currently known about her; Mabel Alice Rickey (married surname: Jakle) was born in 1918 and passed away in 1996; Sue Rickey (married surname: Adams) was born in 1923 and passed away in 1983; Elizabeth Rickey was born circa 1924 in Missouri, but little else is currently known about her, too.

In 1910, Branch and Jane lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Branch was employed as a baseball coach for the University of Michigan. The couple lived in a shared rented house at 1218 Washtenaw Avenue.[7]

In 1920,[8] the Rickey family lived in their own (under mortgage) home[8] on Bartmer Avenue[8] in (the City of) St. Louis, Missouri.[8] Branch worked as the "President"[8] of, "Employer"[8] at, and field manager of a "Base Ball Co." (St. Louis Cardinals)[8] The older children,[8] Mary and Branch, Jr., attended school,[8] while Jennie kept house, with the younger children,[8] Jane and Mabel also at home.[8]

In 1930, the Rickeys still lived on Bartmer Avenue in St. Louis. Their home was worth $25,000 and contained at least one radio set. Branch still worked for the St. Louis Cardinals, now as Vice President. According to census data, Branch was a veteran of World War I.[6]

At the Rickey home, Jane, who was not employed outside the home, and the children were joined by 2 servants. Presumably assisting Jane with household chores and child care was Aldine Trampe, a 28-year-old single woman from Missouri. Handling the family's transportation needs was 23-year-old James Williams, a single man from South Carolina. All the Rickey children were attending school; and except for the 2 youngest children, all members of the Rickey household could read and write.[6]

In 1940, the Rickey family lived on their own farm, valued at $50,000, at 20 Clayton Road, in Bonhomme Township, in St. Louis County, Missouri. Joining Branch, Jane, and their daughters Jane, Alice, Sue, and Betty, were Jane's mother, Mary C. Moulton, and sister, Mabel Moulton. In addition, 4 employees lived on the farm: presumed couple Katie B. and Silmer Henry, Josephine Spencer, and John Moore. Silmer and John were employed part-time (18-20 hours per week) as yardmen; Katie and Josephine were employed full time (40 hours per week) as maids. Branch worked a 72-hour week as Vice President and Business Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.[9]

On December 20, 1946, Branch, part owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Club, and 5 other men (presumed co-owners and/or management team) arrived from Montréal, Québec, Canada, at LaGuardia Airport in New York, aboard a private aircraft that was owned by the club.[10]

  • (coming, sooner or later - breaking the color barrier!)

Branch died on December 9, 1965, in Columbia, Missouri.[11][12]
