Biography

John Ward Rickinson was baptised at All Saints, Kilham on 14 November 1841. He was the son of farmer, James Cope Rickinson and his wife, Mary Cassandra Ward. [1] James and his family lived in Middle St. [2] At the age of 19 John was living at 58 Northgate, Halifax in the household of his employer, James Wadsworth, linen draper.

He returned to Kilham and on the 19th of May 1867 married Elizabeth Anderson, [3] [4] daughter of wealthy gentleman farmer, Edward Anderson and his wife, Jane Beilby.

Babies grave

Two daughters, Elizabeth Jane and Ellice Mary, were born in quick succession. Elizabeth's father died on the 12th of April 1870 aged only 53 and while the family was still mourning, Elizabeth and Ellice both fell sick. Elizabeth died on 26th of the month [5] and baby Ellice on 28th. [6] They were buried together at All Saints, near their grandfather, on the 30th.

" In affectionate remembrance of Elizabeth Jane the beloved daughter of John Ward and Elizabeth Rickinson of this place born January 186... died April 1870. Also of Ellice Mary the beloved daughter of the above born September 4th 1869 died April 28th 1870. Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven."[7]

Edward Anderson had left an estate of some £9000 more than enough to take care of his dependents and he left them Wear Cottage as well but Elizabeth's brother, David, made other plans for his siblings. He was a bank clerk in Doncaster and on the 11th of October 1870 he married Jane Maria Craven. John was one of the witnesses at the wedding. David and Jane settled at Balby and most of the Anderson children moved into his home. By the time of the 1871 Census Elizabeth, John and Elizabeth's sister, Mary, were living at Wear Cottage with their new baby, Robert Anderson Rickinson aged 2 months. At the time John was unemployed.[8]

John and Elizabeth left the sadness of Kilham behind and by 1881 were living at Westgate, Elland cum Greetland where John was in business as a grocer and dealer in provisions. By this time they had a family of four sons. [9]

At the 1891 Census John was living at Kirkleatham, Coatham with his family and his wife's niece, Lucy Hindle, occupied as a grocer.[10]

John died at Coatham on the 14th of February 1894 leaving an estate valued at £953 15s. [11]
