James Smith Riddell, 87, was born in rural Steuben Township, Marshall County, Illinois, the son of the late William Smith Riddell and Elizabeth B. (Wescott) Riddell.
James married Clarabel Schoof on June 6, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Henry, Ill. She survives.
He is also survived by two sons, William J. (Susanne) Riddell and James R. (Sally) Riddell, three daughters, Mary L. (Gregg) Kessling, Marjorie J. (Richard) Gilmore, and Nancy P. (Doug) Riddell-Dudra, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Travis, and two brothers, William Wescott Riddell and Robert Gene Riddell.
James was a grain, livestock farmer and a Polled Hereford breeder in the rural Sparland area, beginning at the early age of 9.
His memberships include, LaPrairie United Presbyterian Church, church elder, past director of the LaPrairie U.P. Cemetery Association and served as treasurer for 45 years. He was a past director of the Henry State Bank, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for awhile, member of the Illinois and American Hereford Associations, Marshall County Historical Society and Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau.
