The son of Anthony Riddle (1868-1961) and Cassandra Hart (175-1952), Ira was born in Webster County, West Virginia in 1904.[1][2] His father was a laborer at a public works job, and they had a large family:
Lou Ana (1891-1993)
Elva C. (1893-)
Sarah Susan (1895-1995)
Kelley Scott (1894-1940)
Leatha J. (1899-1993)
G. Clarice (1903-)
Edgar J. (1906-2001)
Myrtle E. (1908-2001)
Eda Belle (1910-1993)
Samuel Edward (1917-1996)
Herbert Ralph (1918-1994)
Times were tough in West Virginia following the stock market crash in 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression, and Anthony moved the family to Akron, Ohio where he, his sons, Ira and Edgar, and his daughter, Myrtle, and Myrtle's husband, all worked at the rubber plant there.[3] Ira ended up moving to Detroit, where he found work in a factory and met and married Ingrid Nuquist, a maid from Grosse Pointe Farms. They married in Detroit on February 1, 1936. Ira was 31 and Ingrid was 24.[4] Ira and Ingrid didn't stay in Detroit long; he registered for the draft on February 16, 1942, when he and Ingrid were living in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was working as a tire retreader at Gidney Brothers in Cincinnati.[5] They moved again, and ended up finally in California. Ira passed away at the age of 17, while residing in Fontana in San Bernardino County.[6] He and Ingrid are buried at Green Acres Memorial Park in Bloomington, California.[7]
