Biography

John Riddle was born on 7 Oct 1861 at Arbroath, Angus, Scotland to William Riddle and Jane More.[1][2]

In the 1861 census the young family were doing quite well for themselves, William was working as a baker employing 4 men and the family employed a domestic servant named Elizabeth Fairweather. The family residence was at 43 St Mary Street, Arbroath. John would be born a few months later on 7 Oct 1861 to William Riddle and Jane More.[3][4]

John was only 1yr3mth old when his father passed away in 1863. Within days of William's death Jane had to sell the bakery at the corner of Spink and St Mary Street. The advertisement for the sale was published in the local newspaper and the property was described as having a living space above the bakery.

When John was 9 he was living at 23 Spink Street with his mother and siblings as well as his maternal uncle James and a boarder named David Scott. His mom had a small shop and was now "married" to a man named Mr Mcdonald. [5] Local newspapers published a story about a Jane Riddle who had been scammed by a neighboring town resident named Mr Mcdonald whom she had thought she had married, however he was already married at the time to another lady.

It is not known where John was at the time of the 1881 census, he is not found living with his mother. John's brother Alexander however was living with their mother at 32 Fergus Sq, St Vigeans, Forfar.

John's brother William married a fellow St Vigean's girl named Jane Malcolm probably in about 1876 in St Vigeans, Arbroath. John, Jane, William, and Alexander all left Scotland and set sail for South Africa. Jane and William went to Kimberley and set up a bakery, while John and Alexander married Craddock sisters Gertrude and Jessie Trollip.[6]
