Biography

Charlotte Riddle was born in about 1852 in Erie County, New York to Lucy Andrus and Joseph Montreville Riddle. In 1855, 3-year-old Charlotte was living in Clarence, Erie, New York with her parents and three siblings. Her father was a farmer.

In 1860, the Riddle family was residing in Lockport, Niagara, New York where Joseph Riddle farmed. A fifth child, James, was added to the Riddle family.

In 1865, Charlotte was living with her family in Clarence, Erie, New York. Her father and brothers, Clark and Charles, were farmers. The household included her married sister, Lucy Duncan and her 4-year-old son, Franklin.

Charlotte married Lorenzo Curtiss on October 25, 1868 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. In 1870, they were living in Little Valley with their 1-year-old daughter, Alta Belle. Lorenzo was a farmer.

Charlotte and Lorenzo's second daughter, Lucy A., was born in Lowell, Kent, Michigan on September 12, 1872. Lorenzo continued to work as a farmer.

On December 30, 1878, Lorenzo was granted a land patent of 160 acres in Emmet County, Michigan under the Congressional Homestead Act of 1862.

By 1880, Charlotte and her two daughters, ages 8 and 10, had returned home to Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York and they were living with her parents, Lucy and Joseph Riddle. Charlotte's brother, James, was also in the household. Lorenzo stayed in Michigan.

In 1892, Charlotte and her daughter, Alta Belle, were living together in Little Valley. Charlotte, age 40, was a seamstress.

Charlotte married her second husband, William Eggleston of Randolph, Cattaraugus, New York, on November 14, 1904. As recorded in the 1905 New York State Census, they resided in Randolph.

Charlotte died in 1929 and was buried in Randolph Cemetery, Randolph, Cattaraugus, New York.
