Biography

William Alfred Riddle was born in Hastings in 1889. ^[1]

He was baptised in Hastings, All Saints, on 13 March 1889, and was the son of George Philip Riddle and his wife Elizabeth Ann Maria ^[2]

William married Mary Trigwell in Hastings in 1910. ^[3]

In 1915, William enlisted into the Royal Garrison Artillery. His address at the time was 34 Malling Street, Lewes, and his next of kin was his wife Mary. William and Mary had been married on 27 August 1910, in Hastings, All Saints, and they had three children Mabel Elizabeth born 1 December 1910, William Samuel George born 10 June 1913, and Charles Albert born 10 June 1915. After his wife's death in 1916, in his absence the custody of his three children was given to Mrs W Chequerll? who lived in Lewes. William saw active service overseas as a gunner, and was discharged in September 1918 as being medically unfit with pleurisy. He passed away in Lewes a few weeks later on 23 October 1918^{[4] [5]}. A note on the CWGC website stated that his wife had died in Portslade sanitorium.
