Biography

1776 Project
Private James Rideout served with 5th Regiment, New Hampshire Militia during the American Revolution.

James Rideout was the second of seven children of Rowland and Judith (Bedell) Rideout. One of James’ brothers, Nathaniel, died as a toddler and the next boy born was given the same name. According to Herbert Rideout and Roslyn Schaefer documentation on findagrave.com, “James came to Hollis from Nottingham West (now Hudson, NH), about 1762 and purchased 1000 acres of land on the west side of the Nashua River. He was one of the largest landowners in town. The farm fronted on the Nashua River and was called Bowditch Place.” He married Mary Blackman two years later. James served as a private in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Bennington, VT, in August of 1777 under Capt. John Goss’ company of Hollis volunteers. He became a large landholder and a solid citizen, showing no signs of the mental instability his father suffered from.

James died in 1809. James and his wife Mary are buried in the Congregational Church Cemetery in Hollis, NH. The cemetery is located behind the church which was established April 20, 1743.

They had nine children. Joseph, my ancestor, was given the same name as his brother who died at 3 years of age. Actually his brother died 6 months after Joseph was born. His brother must have been very ill and expected to die soon. James served as a private in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Bennington, VT, in August of 1777 under Capt. John Goss’ company of Hollis volunteers. James Sr, Mary, James Jr, and infant Joseph are all buried in the Congregational Church Cemetery in Hollis, NH. The cemetery is located behind the church which was established April 20, 1743.
