Betty Ridge was the daughter of a humble Thames fisherman. She was reputed to have served beer in a makeshift inn on the Island, Noah's Ark, in the Thames near Northmoor, Oxfordshire when she met by chance an orphaned undergraduate from Christchurch College, Oxford, William Flower, 2nd Viscount of Ashbrook, who by chance was walking along the Thames.
