Biography

Ninian Ridgway was born about 15 January 1786[1] in Virginia[2].

Ninian Ridgeway was raised in the ministry, starting with Friendship Church, in Clark County. He was ordained about 1818, and moved his membership to Old Goshen Church. After preaching here some four or five years, he moved to Missouri, and settled within the bounds of Salem Association. He was among the ministers of that body as late as 1830. Rev. Ninian Ridgeway, along with Thomas P. Stephens and Tolivar Craig, is credited with organizing the Providence Baptist Church in New Bloomfield, Callaway County, Missouri on August 05, 1826. [3]

He married Martha Patsy (Redmon) Ridgway[4] in Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky on 15 Jan 1807[4][5][6]. Together they had 11 children:

Ninian and his family moved to Callaway County, Missouri[6][4] in 1823[6][4].

In 1841, Ninian bought 40 acres in Callaway County, Missouri from the federal land office [7].

His wife Martha appears to have died between 1840 and 1850, as she is present in 1840 census (based on age of eldest female)[8] , but not in 1850 census[9].

Ninian Died on 05 Dec 1869 in Callaway County, Missouri, USA and was buried in the private family cemetery [1].

Research Notes

  • Ninian's Birth and death dates are set from the record found on the Callaway County, Missouri Journal web site[1].
  • The 1810[10] and 1820 census[11], both which named only the head of household), list 4 Ridgways in Clark County Kentucky: John, Rezin, Ninian, and Zachariah. Zachariah Ridgeway has a relatively detailed memorial on Find-a-Grave[12] that states that he moved to Boone County Missouri in 1831, and lived there on the same farm for 40 years (until his death on12 Dec 1871). The book "A History of Pioneer Families of Missouri" states that Ninian Ridgway moved to Callaway County Missouri in 1823. The 1850 census for "Zach" Ridgeway[9] (the only record I have found that names the person who is likely Ninian by a form of the oft-reported middle name) shows him residing at District 12, Callaway, Missouri[9]. Another 1850 census record for Zachariah Ridgway [13]shows him residing at District 8, Boone, Missouri[13]. The estimated ages of the heads of household, and the household members are different, so these are clearly different people. The presence of these two men in both Clark County, Kentucky, and Missouri at near the same time seems to have caused them to sometimes be seen as the same person, hence all the profiles on Ancestry and FamilySearch for "Ninian Zachary Ridgway" that cite his death as 1869 in Boone County of his wife as Sally Redmon. I have added a profile for Zachariah Ridgway here on Wikitree, in hopes of ending the confusion. I have removed the middle and nickname from this profile, since the census report is insufficient evidence.
  • Further reading of the reference "Family History of George and William Redmon of Pennsylvania and Kentucky"[4] reveals that Ninian and Zachariah were both sons of John Ridgway and Rachel Riley,[4] and so were brothers. Further, they married sisters, daughters of of William Redmon and Matha "Patsie" Jewell"[4].

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ninian by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ninian:
