Biography

Elsie was born in 1908. She is the daughter of Alfred Ridley and Jane Halliday.

Kalgoorlie Miner (WA : 1895 - 1950), Thursday 26 November 1942, page 4
Samuel James North, soldier, of Kal goorlie, was granted a decree nisi, returnable in March, 1943, from Elsie May North, the respondent, in a petition for divorce dealt with by the Com- missioner, Mr, L. W. Stotter, in the Eastern Goldfields Circuit Court on Tuesday.

North, who was represented by Mr. E. M. Heenan, petitioned on the grounds of respondent's adultery with Edward Jollands, of Coolgardie. The case was undefended. Petitioner gave evidence that he was married to his wife, Elsie May Ridley, at Cuballing, on June 23, 1925. There were three children of the marriage and their ages ranged from nine to 15 years. Petitioner was living with his wife and family in Kalgoorlie for four or five years, and enlisted in the A.I.F. in August, 1940, when he made full allotment to his wife and children. North went overseas in January, 1941. In October of that year his wife wrote and mentioned the circumstances in which she was living with Jollands and asked for a divorce. The two younger children had been placed in a convent and the elder one was employed at munitions work. Petitioner had applied to the army for compassionate leave, which was granted, and he returned to Australia in June, 1942. He had made unsuccessful overtures to his wife in which he had promised to forgive her if she returned to him. She was now living with Jollands at Coolgardie. Petitioner had known Jollands before going overseas. He was always treated as a friend of the family. The petitioner was granted custody of the children.
