Biography

Kent (historic flag)
Edward Ridley was born in Bromley, Kent, England.

BORN: 1868

1871 CENSUS: Listed as Edward James Ridley (age 3) living with his parents James and Charlotte (??Elizabeth), and his siblings, at 44 Palace Road, Bromley, Kent.

1881 CENSUS: Listed as Edward James Ridley (age 13) living with his mother Elizabeth Ridley (age49), and his siblings, at 49 Palace Road, Bromley, Kent.

ARMY RECORDS: Edward James attested on 1 Aug 1889, and joined the Army at Aldershot on 2 Aug 1889 as a Driver (presumably of horses) in the Army Service Corps, No. 8921. At his medical examination he was recorded as being 21 years and 8 months old (suggesting his birth was about December 1867), with a height of five feet two and three quarter inches, a fresh complexion, green eyes, brown hair, and professing the religion of Church of England. His next of kin are shown as Margaret, his mother, and Alfred John, his elder brother. He was transferred to the reserve in 1894, and then recalled under Special Army Order 1 Jan 1900, perhaps to fill in for troops sent out to the Boer War, being finally discharged on 5 May 1902. His entire service was given in the UK. His records show that during his service he married Margaret Lynch, at Blackheath, on 14 Oct 1896, and that their first three children were born, Margaret Mary on 17 Aug 1897, Edward John (my Father) on 2 Feb 1899, and Alfred James Joseph on 29 Jun 1900. Edward James converted to the Roman Catholic Church when he married Margaret Lynch (who was Irish) and all his children were brought up as Catholics. His siblings remained in the Church of England, and given the animousities of the time, it seems possible that a family rift might have developed.

1891 CENSUS: Edward James would have been 23, and in the Army. I have not yet found him in the Census records.

1901 CENSUS: Listed as Edward J. Ridley age 33 living at 82 Main Road, Mottingham, Kent, with his wife Margaret Ridley (age 30) and their three children: Margaret M. Ridley (age 3), Edward J. Ridley (age 2), and Alfred James Ridley (age 9 months).

1911 CENSUS: Listed as Edward James Ridley - horse keeper, casual carrier - age 43, living at 1 Clyst Villas, Devonshire Road, Mottingham, Kent, with his wife Margaret Ridley (age 40) - dressmaker/own account - and their children: Margaret (age 13), Edward (age 12), Alfred (age10), Hugh (age 9), and Mary (age 3). The additional information is given that during the 14 years of their marriage 5 children had been born live and were still living.

DEATH: England and Wales Death Index 1916-2007 age 73 June 1941

Memories: 1

Edward James Ridley was my grandfather. He was a quiet retiring man, who had converted from Church of England to Roman Catholic on his marriage to Margaret Lynch in 1896, while he was in the Army. When I knew him, he had been or was a greenkeeper at the Royal Blackheath Golf Club and a jobbing gardner. He had reached retirement age by the time I was five, and my most abiding memory is of him sitting in his armchair, smoking his pipe. Contributed by Peter Ridley (Ridley-319)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Edward by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Edward:
