During the War of 1812, Samuel served as a captain in the 3rd York Militia. He was usually stationed at Fort York. His company was sometimes referred to as the Pickering Company. A number of his men were from this township. [3]

Research Notes

Secondary sources suggest that Samuel is the son of Thomas Ridout and Isabella Smith (1702-1778). Other secondary sources said her last name was Sullivan and she was the daughter of the Postmaster at Annapolis. Samuel was named after a prominent member of the Annapolis merchant class, Samuel Smith, who went on to become a Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army.
