Biography

Birth and Baptism

Michael Albert, the son of Michael Ridout and his wife Sarah, née Hallet, who had been married at the parish church of St Mary at Holnest on 16 October 1838[1] was born Holwell in 1840[2] and baptized at the parish church of St Mary at Glanvilles Wootton on 2 August 1840.[3]

Childhood

The 6 June 1841 census records Albert living with his father Michael, his paternal grandparents Robert and Jane, and an Elizabeth Ridout, aged 30, relationship unknown. Their residence was at Glanvilles Wootton, and Albert was 1 year old.[4]

The 30 March 1851 census records Albert, listed as Albert Michael, living at Glanvilles Wootton with his parents Michael and Sarah and his three younger siblings Mary Ann, Harriet Jane, and Young. Michael is listed as aged 10, a scholar, and birthplace Holwell, Dorset.[5]

The 7 April 1861 census records Albert, unmarried, lodging with the family of John Hallet at Hazelbury Bryan. Albert's age is given as 20, his occupation as Cordwainer, and his birthplace as Holwell.[6]

First Marriage

Albert's first wife was Rebecca Kingsbury, whom he married by banns at the parish church of St Thomas a Becket at Pulham on 12 June 1862. Witnesses were Thomas Kingsbury and Ann Ridout.[7][8]

First Wife's Death

Albert's wife Rebecca, aged 28, died childless at Hazelbury Bryan in June 1866[9], and was buried at the parish church of St Thomas a Becket at Pulham on 26 June 1866.[10]

Second Marriage

Albert remarried to Mary Chaldecott, a spinster, at the parish church of St Peter and St Paul at Mappowder on 17 June 1868. Albert's occupation was recorded as Shoemaker, his residence as Hazelbury Bryan, and his father as Michael Ridout, a Shoemaker. Witnesses were Michael Marsh and Susanna Chaldecott.[11][12]

Children

Albert and Mary had seven children as follows:

  1. Elizabeth Harriet born at Hazelbury Bryan in 1869[13] and baptized at the parish church of St Mary and St James at Hazelbury Bryan on 19 September 1869. Abode is listed as Hazelbury Bryan and Albert's occupation as Shoemaker.[14]
  2. Arthur was born at Woodrow in 1871[15] and baptized at the parish church of St Mary and St James at Hazelbury Bryan on 9 April 1871. Abode is listed as Woodrow and Albert's occupation as Shoemaker.[16]
  3. Albert was born in 1873 at Hazelbury Bryan, his birth being registered in Q2 of 1873.[17] Albert died in infancy, and his death was registered in Q2 of 1873.[18]
  4. Robert was born at Hazelbury Bryan in 1874[19] and was baptized at the parish church of St Mary and St James at Hazelbury Bryan on 21 Jun 1874. Abode is listed as Woodrow and Albert's occupation as Shoemaker.[20]
  5. Gertrude was born in 1876 at Hazelbury Bryan, her birth being registered at Sturminster in Q1 of 1876.[21]
  6. Sarah was born in 1878 at Hazelbury Bryan, her birth being registered at Sturminster in Q3 of 1878.[22]
  7. Ellen was born in 1881 at Hazelbury Bryan, her birth being registered at Sturminster in Q2 of 1881.[23]

Census Records

The 2 Apr 1871 census records Albert living with his second wife Mary and children Harriet and Arthur at Sherborne Road, Hazelbury Bryan. Albert's age is listed as 30, his occupation as Boot Maker and his birthplace as Holwell.[24]

The 3 April 1881 census lists Albert living at Woodrow, Hazelbury Bryan, with his wife Mary and all six surviving children. Albert's age is listed as 40, his occupation as Bootmaker, and his birthplace as Holwell.[25]

The 5 April 1891 census records Albert living at Woodrow with his wife Mary, and their children Robert, Sarah, and Ellen. Albert's age is given as 51, his occupation as Shoe Maker, and his birthplace as Holwell.[26]

The 31 Mar 1901 census records Albert living at Packers Hill, Holwell with his wife Mary and their unmarried daughter Gertrude. Albert's age is given as 61, his occupation as Shoe Maker (to which was appended "& General Repairer"), and his birthplace as Holwell.[27]

The 2 Apr 1911 census lists Albert still living at Packers Hill, Holwell with his wife Mary and unmarried daughter Gertrude. The census states that Albert and Mary had been married for 45 years, had six children born alive, six children still living, and one child who had died. Albert's age is given as 70, his occupation as Boot Repairer and his birthplace as Glanvilles Wootton.[28]

Death and Burial

Michael Albert, aged 76, died at Holwell in January 1917[29] and was buried at the parish church of St Laurence at Holwell on 13 Jan 1817.[30]

Names

I'm finding a lot of confusion with the names:

  1. Who is this profile about? Is it Michael Albert, or Albert Michael? The Civil Birth Registration[2] states Michael Albert Ridout. There isn't another Michael born over the period 1838-42. There are a couple of Albert children born late 1841 and early 1842. The baptism record[3] agrees with the birth registration. It is Michael Albert. There are no other Michael baptisms within 10 miles over the same 1838-1842 period. Neither are there any Albert baptisms. The death[29] and burial records[30] from 1917 both use the listing Michael Albert. However, all other records seem to use Albert. Therefore, I have to conclude that the proper name for this individual is Michael Albert Ridout, with his preferred name being Albert.
  2. Who is the father of this profile? This has been entered as Michael Albert. However, all the records simply state Michael. The baptism record of the father, the son of Robert and Jane Ridout, names him just Michael on his baptism at Glanvilles Wootton on 17 February 1808.[31] The death[32] and burial records[33] for Michael in 1883 both state simply Michael. Therefore I conclude that the father is simply Michael, and his profile needs to be corrected.

Mother

I'm also finding some difficulty with the wife of Michael, the father of the subject of this profile. Looking at marriages of Michael, there are two:

  1. Michael Ridout, of the parish of Glanvilles Wootton, married Elizabeth Styles, of the parish of Holwell, at Glanvilles Wootton on 13 June 1830. Witnesses were Robert Ridout and Elizabeth Ridout.[34]
  2. Michael Ridout, a widower from Holwell, son of Robert Ridout, married Sarah Hallet, a spinster, also of Holwell, at Holnest on 16 October 1838.[1]

This suggests the Elizabeth should have died before the second marriage. There is, indeed a burial record for Elizabeth Ridout, resident of Holwell, aged 29, at Glanvilles Wootton on 17 January 1838.[35]

I searched for children of the first marriage, but found none.

So, for the 1841 census[4], we should have Michael and Sarah, with one child. All I'm finding is Robert and Jane, both aged 70, living at Glanvilles Wootton, with an Elizabeth Ridout, aged 30, Michael Ridout, aged 30 and Albert Ridout, aged 1. There is no Sarah. Sarah is present in the 1851 census[5], so hadn't died prior to the 1841 census. So who is this Elizabeth? I checked for siblings of father Michael. There is only one, and that is Robert Ridout, baptized 24 May 1812.[36] However, there is an Elizabeth Ridout born on 19 February 1809, and baptized at Holwell on 22 May 1809, the daughter of Thomas Ridout and his wife Elizabeth.[37] This seems a strong candidate as a) Elizabeth is listed before Michael, and b) Elizabeth should have been listed as age 30. I was considering that Elizabeth might have been a mistake for Sarah, but the age is incorrect, and Sarah should have been listed after Michael, so this seems a less plausible theory.

Reviewing possibilities for the father Michael's first wife, there is an Elizabeth Styles, baptized 24 January 1808 at Holwell, the daughter of Thomas Styles and his wife Ann.[38] This ties in pretty well with the burial, which places her birth about 1809.

Finding a baptism for Michael's second wife Sarah is proving a lot more problematic. The census records are consistent and indicate that Sarah was born at Henstridge, Somerset about 1816. There are no obvious candidate baptisms for Sarah. There are, though, Hallet family baptisms in Henstridge around that time.

Almost all are the children of Joseph Hallett (1776-1852) who married a Mary Hallett at Henstridge on 15 Nov 1795[39] with whom he had nine children over the period 1796-1810. Joseph's wife Mary died, aged 48, and was buried at Henstridge on 26 Nov 1820.[40] Joseph remarried to Charlotte Goddard (1791-1863) at Templecombe on 18 Feb 1823[41] with whom he had a further seven children over the period 1824 to 1832. One of these was Ellen Celia (Hallett) Gatcombe (1828-1907). Thus Joseph seems at first sight an unlikely candidate for Sarah's father, as he is fathering no children over the period 1810 to 1824.

The one other baptism at Henstridge is for Mary Hallett, daughter of James Hallet and his wife Mary, baptized on 6 Feb 1814.[42] Perhaps this is a possible starting point for further research, theorizing that Sarah might be a younger sibling, although I have been unable to find a good candidate marriage record.

However, there are a very significant additional relevant fact already known. According to her marriage record, Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Hallett. Furthermore, Joseph's wife Mary's burial record states Mary was 48 when she died in 1820, thus would have been still of child bearing age about 1816, the approximate year of Sarah's birth. So I propose that:

  • Sarah is the daughter of Joseph Hallett and his wife Mary.
  • Possibly the author of the 1814 baptism record for Mary, the daughter of James and Mary, has erroneously cited James as the father, instead of Joseph.

Siblings

This profile lists two siblings:

  1. Mary Ann - This is correct. Mary Ann's birth was registered at Dorchester and Cerne in Q4 of 1843,[43] and Mary Ann was baptized at Glanvilles Wootton on 23 January 1844.[44]
  2. Harriet Jane - This is correct. Harriet Jane's birth was registered at Dorchester and Cerne in Q2 of 1846,[45] and Harriet Jane was baptized at Glanvilles Wootton on 29 August 1847.[46]

However, I found three siblings that need to be added:

  • Walter Young, birth registration not found, but baptized at Glanvilles Wootton on 23 July 1850.[47]
  • Louisa Mary, birth registered at Dorchester and Cerne in Q3 of 1853[48] and baptized at Glanvilles Wootton on 4 September 1853.[49]
  • Sarah, birth registered at Dorchester in Q1 of 1857[50] and as Sarah Caroline baptized at Glanvilles Wootton on 6 September 1857.[51]

Children

This profile lists six children for Albert and Mary. Comparing them to my research yields the following conclusions with respect to their appearance in this profile:

  1. Elizabeth is a child, however Elizabeth was born and baptized as Elizabeth Harriet, and, indeed, was listed as Harriet in the 1871 census. Elizabeth's profile requires the forenames updating. Also, Elizabeth Harriet married Henry Cluett Durrant at Glanvilles Wootton on 24 Mar 1896,[52] and died without further marriage on 14 March 1951.[53][54] Therefore, her profile also needs updating for her marriage and final surname of Durrant.
  2. Arthur is correct.
  3. Albert is missing, and his profile needs to be added. Note that I found no baptism or burial records for Albert.
  4. Robert is correct.
  5. Gertrude is correct. I don't know what happened to Gertrude after 1911 so cannot comment further.
  6. Sarah is correct. I can find Sarah still unmarried in the 1901 census[55] but don't know what happened to her after that so cannot comment further.
  7. Ellen is correct. I can find Ellen still unmarried in the 1911 census at Tiverton[56] but don't know what happened to her after that so cannot comment further.
