Sophia Riffel was born in 1775 in Shcherbakovka, Volgograd, Russia, to parents Georg Adam and Elisabeth Barbara Riffel. The couple are the only Riffels in Shcherbakovka, two of the first settlers of that village.
Sophia's first husband was Konrad Roth, from Kraft. They had a son, Christoph, in 1796. Her husband must have died shortly after the birth of their son, because two years later in the 1798 census, she had remarried to Johann Jakob Abig and had an infant son with her second husband. She and her husband went on to have five children.
