John Rigby was born in 1842 in Parr, Lancashire. He was the son of Thomas Rigby and Betty (Twist) Rigby.

John married Sarah Critchley on 1 Feb 1863 at Christ Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Both were 21 years old and living in Eccleston; neither had been married before. John was a labourer. Their fathers were named as Thomas Rigby (pollice) and Peter Critchley (bricklayer). The witnesses were Thomas Critchley and Martha Naylor.

Their son Thomas Rigby was born on 8 Apr 1867 in Sutton, Lancashire. He was christened on 7 Nov 1869 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire.
