John was born in 1796. He is the son of Ellen Rigby.
Baptised 21 June 1795 at St. John, Preston. John’s father must have been an Eaves. there were Eaves in Samlesbury and Preston but none that can be identified as John's father.
There is some confusion about the surname used by John. For his baptism his name was recorded as John Eaves Rigby. The marriage register has his name as John Hayes alias Rigby and he signed John Hayes Rigby. John may have decided that as he was baptised as Rigby he should sign that way but more likely James Barnes, who married them, knowing that he was born before George and Ellen were married told him he should sign that way. The baptism register for the two children baptised by James Barnes also has his name as Rigby. The record for his son, Hugh, has it as John Hayes Rigby and for daughter, Ellen, as John Rigby. For the children baptised in Walton le Dale his name is recorded as John Hays or John Hayes. The burial register for John has the name as Hays. John must have used Hayes as his name.
John was living in Samlesbury in 1824 when his son, Hugh, was baptised . His occupation was listed as husbandman. When his daughter, Ellen, was baptised in 1826 he was living in Walton-le-Dale and listed as a labourer. The baptism record for his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1829 in Walton-le-Dale has him as a husbandman again but those for his other two sons have him as a labourer. He was probably a farm labourer. John was buried 24 June 1838 at St. Leonard the Less, Samlesbury.
