Biography

Robert Rigby was born in 1883 in St Helens. He was the son of Thomas Rigby and Ann (Beesley) Rigby. He was christened on 30 Dec 1883 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton (Anglican). The family's address was given as 8 Mill Lane, and his father's occupation as labourer.

Robert's paternal grandmother Ellen died in 1887 in St Helens, aged 76. She and her husband had been living with Robert's parents.

By April 5th 1891, Robert's parents were still living in Mill Lane. Their two eldest daughters were away from home on census night - Margaret Ellen, now 12, was working as a char girl in Runcorn, Cheshire, and Annie, now 13, was visiting her. There were three children in the household - Robert aged seven, Mary (four) and baby Martha. Thomas' father was still living with them, but was retired; his stated age was 81. Thomas was listed as a plate glass labourer, but wasn't employed.

By March 31st 1901, Robert's father had his own business, dealing in coal. The family was still living in Mill Lane. The two eldest daughters were again not in the household though neither had married yet. Robert was working as a coal carter, presumably for his father. Mary was now fourteen, and Martha ten, and there was one other child, Minnie aged seven.

By April 2nd 1911, they were still in Mill Lane, and Robert's father was still a coal dealer. The only children still at home were Robert, who was assisting in the business, and Mary, who was 23 and not in paid employment.

Robert's father died in 1932 in St Helens, aged 83.

Robert's death was registered in the first quarter of 1956, in Prescot district. He was 72.
