There was a smallpox epidemic in Indiana in the 1850s and 1860s in central Indiana. [11]
In the winter of 1863, Ransom and Sarah are given as having left Johnson County (adjacent and south of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN) in their wagon to go to Pulaski County, Indiana (northwest Indiana) to the farm home of their son, Samuel David/Davis. Their daughter-in-law, Grace (Greenwood) Riggs, Samuel's wife, and three of his children had died from small pox. Apparently while there, Sarah also became ill perhaps also from small pox and died there in Pulaski County, Indiana. Having placed her coffin in the wagon, Ransom took her body back home to Nineveh, Johnson Co., IN where he buried her. Find A Grave: Memorial #156371234 However, within days Ransom evidently became ill perha;s also with small pox and died 16 January 1863 in Johnson County, Indiana.
