Biography

Samuel Riggs was born in 1728 in Morris, Morris, New Jersey. His parents were Samuel Riggs and Keziah Baldwin.

He married Elizabeth Tompkins

Together they had 9 known children:

In Nov. 1784, Samuel Riggs received a land grant for 400 acres in Surry County, North Carolina. The land was on Mitchel's River[1]

Samuel Riggs's will was written 12 Sep 1798 and proven in Surry County, North Carolina August term 1800. In it he mentions:

Samuel Riggs wrote his will in 1798, but his Probate shows that he died Before August Term 1800. [2]

Transcription:

In the name of the father, son and Holy Ghost amen by Samuel Riggs Surry County and State of North Carolina being advanced in years and weekly in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God. Calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all man once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament

First and principally I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it, then my body to be interred at the discretion of my friends and as touching such a world the estate as it has pleased to God to bless me with in this life.

I give, devise, and dispose of the same in the following manner and form:

First, I give and bequeath to Elizabeth Riggs (my beloved wife) the use of the plantation that I now live on and also of the mill her lifetime and one cow her choice of my stock and one horse her choice of my horses with all my household furniture

Item: to Lott Riggs (my son) I give and devise my Apple Orchard lying on the north side of the spring branch and the land lying below the road that directs to the mill to a black oak corner of the 100 acre lot in the line of the 400 acre lot from dance down the river including the mail and all my land lying on the south side of the river also the aforesaid hundred acre lot.

Item: I give and devise to Silas Riggs (my son) the land lying on the north west side of the above mentioned line of hundred acre lot. Likewise the 50 acre lot that lies joining the hundred acre lot above Lott Riggs with all the rest of my land sand premises on Mitchell river

Item: to Zadock Riggs (my son) I give and devise 1 pound to be paid out of my movable estate.

Item: I give advice to Chloe Scott 10 pounds to be paid out of my movable estate

Item: I give and devise to Eunice Lasswell 5 pounds to be paid out of my livable estate.

Item: I give advice to Iram Riggs (my son) 10 pounds to be paid out of my movable estate.

Item: I give and revise to Mary Wilmoth 30 pounds to be paid out of my movable estate.

Item: I give advice to Elizabeth Snow 30 pounds to be paid out of my livable estate.

To Abigail Snow I give and devise the sum of 30 pounds to be paid out of my movable estate.

Item: Then what remains of my movable estate, if any there be, for to be equally divided between Chloe Scott, [[Riggs-5716|Eunice Lasswell], Iram Riggs, Mary Wilmoth, Elizabeth Snow, and Abigail Snow.

And I constitute, make, and ordain Silas Riggs, John Williams, and Ezekiel Wilmoth executors of my estate and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke, and disannul all and every other will and testament and executor here to for ratifying and confirming this to be my last will and testament and no other. In witness hereof, I have to set my hand and seal this 12th day of September 1798
