Biography

Edward Miles Riley was born on April 12, 1784, in Orange County, North Carolina, when his father, Edward Riley, was 35 and his mother, Elizabeth Whitaker, was 19.

He married Mary "Polly" Hudson Westbrook on March 1, 1810, in Franklin [1] They had 15 children in 25 years. In 1830, their home in Franklin included 15 "Free White Persons" and 7 slaves. [2]

The 1840 census has four less white persons (probably children marrying and moving away), but their slave count had increased to 12. [3]

The 1850 census, the first that enumerated everyone by name, lists Edward, Mary, and their large family. [4]

He died on November 12, 1854, in Franklin, Georgia, at the age of 70, and was buried in Banks, Georgia, in the Riley-Bolton Cemetery. [5]

Edward died intestate. His estate began the probate process in Dec 1854 by selling the perishable items. Administrators for the estate were: James Wade, Isaac M David and Madison H Thomas. The land and slaves were sold about a year later in Nov 1855.
