History of Rinehart Family By
David B. Rinehart
Anna, Ohio, Feb. 18, 1889
I herewith write some additional items of family interest, as this old family Bible fell into my hands in June 1888, by the payment of one dollar to my aged Aunt Molly, or “Aunt Polly” Speer as she was known.
Abraham Rinehart, Sr. (my great great grandfather) and his wife were born in Germany, were married in that country, and there were born to them at least four sons, Peter being the youngest. They emigrated to the American colonies and settled in Maryland before the Declaration of Independence, he and his sons becoming citizens by that act. He entered the army as a soldier and fell in one of the engagements, leaving his family poor in this, his adopted country. The children were let out among strangers, Peter, the youngest, my grandfather, being put out to Truxon, a shoemaker, which trade he learned. Peter went out in the late war or war of later date as a substitute for Truxon. His mother married again to a man by the name of Micener and settled on Twin Creek, Montgomery County, Ohio, where Peter visited her the last time in 1830 and where she died shortly after. At the age of 26 Peter married Barbara Bailor, daughter of Jacob & Barbara Bailor, also German by descent, in the year 1798, Dec.24th, on the birthday of the bride, and they settled in Greenbrier Co. Virginia. While there Jacob, Abraham and Hannah were born. About 1804 they moved to Fairfield Co., Ohio where 3 sons and 7 daughters were born to them, making in all five sons and eight daughters. One son and one daughter were not named. About 1826 he moved to Shelby Co. Ohio where both died. The wife at the age of 76 and grandfather at 84. Now only one daughter is alive, Molly who is 85 and very feeble. Louise Struble and Peter, if alive, are in Iowa; the others have passed to their reward.
The girls married as follows: Hannah married George Miller, who was killed in Shelby Co. by a horse July 4, 1837. She afterward married William Etherington who died at the age of 84. Catherine married Harry Struble; she died in Ill. Molly married Jacob Speer, who died in Darke Co., Ohio. She is alive at this writing. Elizabeth married Samuel Moyer who died in 1888. Louise married Jacob Struble, who moved to Iowa about 1850, do not know of the present whereabouts. Christina (or Tena) married John Johnson. She died many years ago in Logan Co. Ohio, he still lives. Barbara married Oran Strickland.
Of the sons Jacob was killed in early life in Seneca Co. at the raising of a mill by accident. His only surviving son, Noah, now lives 2 ½ miles from Sidney, Ohio. Abraham my father dropped dead in Sidney, at the age of 75. Isaac died in Fairfield Co. Ohio, near where he was born at the age of 60. Peter went to Ill. in 1837 and I know nothing further about him.
Abraham was married in 1824 to Miss Catharine Bretz, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Bretz, and there were born to them David, Anna, Barbara (now dead) Elizabeth, and Simon Peter who died in childhood. Anna married John Key and now lives in Perry township. Barbara married John Rouch; she is dead; he still lives. Elizabeth married Levi Ewing who lives in Sidney. My first companion was Julia Ann Baugher, who died leaving 2 little children, Martha who died at the age of 15, and Margaret Isabel, now wife of Rev. Hathaway, of West Cairo, O. I married again Catharine Etherington. To us were born William, who is single and lives in New Bremen, Ohio. Clara Jane married Samuel McCoy, who now lives in Anna, O. Anna married Marshall K. Coon near Hardin, Ohio where they now live.
Additional history.
William A. Rinehart was married Sept. 15, 1891 to Elizabeth Watson and died Oct. 29, 1895 leaving two children, Margaret and Oscar. Anna Key died Dec. 18, 1898.
Noah Rinehart died David B. Rinehart died Feb. 27, 1900. John Key died Mar. 26, 1900.
The family of Jacob Bailor, thro whom this book descended. Jacob Bailor is the first party to whom I can trace it. At his death, 1825, Barbara, his daughter bought it at his sale for $10.00. After her death it became the property of Jacob Speer who was her only child able to read it, but some jealousies sprang up and Catherine Struble got possession of it and extracted $1.00 for the book from them. It was decided that I should become its owner and by the payment of $1.00. It fell into my hands in 1888. I desire this book to continue in my home and then fall into the hands of my children or grandchildren. To my best knowledge this book has been in the family, on grandmother Rinehart’s side of the house since 1740 and since her death in 1848. It has been in the hands of her children nearly 150 years.
I desire this book now to continue in my home while I have a home or my wife has a home; then I want it to go to that one who can use it (if there is such a one). To the best of my knowledge this book has been in the family on my grandmother Rinehart’s side of the house since 1740, and since her death, about 1848, May it bless many souls in its perusal yet.
