Alfred Ripley was a descendant of Mayflower passenger William Bradford.

Biography

Alfred Flower Ripley was born in Windham, Connecticut 13 October 1797. Alfred died 9 March 1873 in Armenia Township, Pennsylvania, at age 75. His body was interred March 1873 in Gray Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania.

He married Aurelia Gray 3 November 1822 in Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania. Aurelia was born 10 April 1802 in Hartwick, New York. Aurelia was the daughter of James A. Gray Sr. and Parthenia White. Aurelia died 24 May 1880 in Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania, at age 78.

Alfred was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The household of Aurelia and Alfred included two males and one female under five, and two females 5-10 for this census.

The household of Aurelia and Alfred included two females under 5, two males 5-10, two males and one female 10-15, and two females 15-2- at the time of this census. Alfred had been employed on the Gray Farm before he married Aurelia. The Ripley farmstead was across the road from where the Baptist Church now stands on Armenia Mountain. He died age 78 y 4 m.

Amy Dewey Winroot's book contains a photograph of Amy and Alfred together, but it is a photocopy of a photocopy and is much too dark to scan. If anyone has a better copy of this photograph, we would like to have access to it. Our earlier reference gave 1871 as death date of Aurelia, but the family Bible record gives her death as 24 May 1880 or 1888.

Nancy Ripley was born in Gray Valley, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 21 Aug 1825. Nancy died 14 Feb 1911 in Troy, Troy Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, at age 85. Her body was interred Feb 1911 in Sylvania Cemetery, Sylvania, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. She married twice. She married Lyman Bristol* 03 Nov 1844 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Walter Bullard Jr. 06 Sep 1857. Walter was born 17 JUL 1803 in Holliston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Walter was the son of Walter Bullard and Charlotte Harris*. He married Emily Curtis* before 1830. Walter died 1888 in Troy, Troy Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, at age 84. His body was interred 1888 in Sylvania Cemetery, Sylvania, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

12 iii. James B. Ripley was born in Gray Valley, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 23 Apr 1827. James died in At Sea, at age unknown. James went to sea and died there.

13 iv. Lester Ripley was born in Gray Valley, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 15 Nov 1828. Lester died 14 MAY 1898 at age 69. He married Helen C. Mitchell* 12 Jun 1861. Helen was born 1840. Lester and Helen were in Columbia Township, Bradford County for the 1880 census.

Her body was interred FEB 1905 in Orebed Cem.,Richmond,Tioga,PA. She married James R. Harvey* 07 APR 1849 in Troy, Troy Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. James was born 15 APR 1827 in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. James died 6 JUN 1864 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island, at age 37. His body was interred 1864 in Orebed Cem.,Richmond,Tioga,PA.

15 vi. Silas Ripley was born in Gray Valley, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 30 Apr 1832. Silas died 20 OCT 1832 in Gray Valley, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age unknown.

She married Levi Cleveland BY 1873. Levi was born 16 APR 1827 in Sterling (Johnson), Lamoille County, Vermont. Levi was the son of Aaron Cleveland and Betsey Dike. He married Irena Dike 10 JUN 1849 in Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lucy and Levi's farm was very near her parents on Armenia Mountain.

18 x. Amy Aurelia Ripley was born in Gray Valley, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 29 MAR 1840. Individual flags: Photograph. Amy died 29 JUL 1915 in Gaines Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 75. Her body was interred Jul 1915 in Knowlton Cemetery, Gaines township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Addison Dewey 19 JUL 1857 in Armenia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Addison was born 23 OCT 1832 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Addison was the son of James Babcock Dewey and Asenath Harding. Addison died 1 MAY 1912 at age 79. His body was interred May 1912 in Knowlton Cemetery, Gaines township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Amy was an excellent nurse who took the place of a doctor on many occasions and at her neighbor's call went to care for them as the need arose. She lived in the country and would wade through deep snow to get there if need be and she never would take any money for her services as she said, "They are my neighbors."

Amy had apple trees set out by the roadside so that travelers going by could stop and get for themselves an apple or two. She loved flowers and had a gorgeous array of them. She had a very large carpet loom and wove beautiful carpeting. She was a good seamstress and made her children's clothes. She also pieced and quilted beautiful quilts. (Amy DEWEY Winroot, p. 70)

20 xii. Julia Louise Ripley was born in Gray Valley, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 17 JAN 1841. Julia died 27 FEB 1869 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 28. Her body was interred MAR 1869 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Henry Francis Dewey 6 FEB 1865 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Henry was born 21 DEC 1843 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Henry was the son of James Babcock Dewey and Asenath Harding. He married Mary J. Davenport 1870. He married Calista Valentine* ABT 1874/77. He married Mary King AFT 1880. Henry died 16 Dec 1927 in Erie, Neosho County, Kansas, at age 83. He was listed as a household member of James Babcock Dewey's house in the Census of 1860 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. James was a farmer with personal property worth $1750. Fanny was a seamstress listed under her birthname rather than a married name (Rumsey). Solon was a farm laborer.
