Biography

Birth & Life Facts

John Ripley was probably born about 1765, based on his stated age at death.[1]

He is said to have been a descendant of the Rev. Peter Hobart of Hingham, Massachusetts, through his daughter Elizabeth, born in England, who married John Ripley, the first, of Hingham, son of William Ripley of Hingham, who came from England in June, 1635.[2]

It appears likely that he was the John Ripley, son of Judge Jeremiah Ripley and his first wife, Eunice Rose, who may have been residing at Coventry, Connecticut, at the time of John's birth.[3] The names of his four children given in Genealogy of a Part of the Ripley Family, John, Eliza, Mary J,, and Eunice, match with other records found for his children.[4]

He is listed as a Major in the United States Thirteenth Regiment of Infantry, serving from February 13, 1799 to February 15, 1800.[5]

Marriages

He married first, Susan Brigham, New York.[4]

He married second, Susannah Greenleaf.[6][7]

Death

On the morning of October 8, 1812, Major John Ripley died at 13 John St., New York City, aged "47 yrs."[1] He was buried at Saint Paul's Chapel and Churchyard in New York City.

Children

According to Genealogy of a Part of the Ripley Family, John Ripley had four children whose names are listed below. However, it appears that John married twice and the Ripley source does not give the name of the mother of each child. We do know through other sources that the fourth child, Eunice, was with his second wife. And daughter Eliza appears to have named two of her children after her parents: Susan Ripley Tracy and John Ripley Tracy. The information for son John comes from his FindaGrave memorial, and has not been independently verified. Nothing has yet been found about daughter Mary J.[4][6][7]

Possibly children with first wife, Susan Brigham:

  1. John Ripley,[4] born about 1792; married Diana Westfall; died January 22, 1860.[8] (See Research Note "Pomeroy")
  2. Eliza Ripley,[4] born March 17, 1792; married, March 31, 1813, Frederick Augustus Tracy; died November 2, 1856.[7][9]
  3. Mary J. Ripley,[4] born ?

Known child with second wife, Susannah Greenleaf:

  1. Eunice Ripley,[4] born 1810; married, May 14, 1834, John Gill Nelson; died September 27, 1882.[7][10]

Research Notes

  • Marriage to Clarissa Pomeroy? According to Albert Pomeroy in Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family, a John Ripley married Clarissa Pomeroy between 1800-1809. They had one known child, John Ripley, who died in Oswego, New York.[11]
It is interesting to note that John Ripley, such as he is depicted as a child above, may have named one of his children "Charles Pomeroy Ripley", which lends credibility to a Pomeroy connection. However, the FindaGrave resource that provided that information also cites John's birth as 1792, while Clarissa Pomeroy's second marriage to John Ripley must have been sometime after the date of her first marriage to John Janes on June 10, 1800, but before her death on February 10, 1809.[11][8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
