Hercules Ritchie was born in 1850 in County Antrim, Ireland[1]. He was the son of Robert Richey and Mary Hall[2]. Note: There are several spelling variations of Ritchie in the records but Ritchie is the spelling that appears on his gravestone.
Hercules emigrated to Canada in 1872[1]. It is not known if he was with his parents.
Hercules married Jane Bates in 1879 at Mulmur, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada[2].
Hercules and Jane had nine known children: Caroline Ida (b. 1879), Mary Ann (b. 1881), Robert John (b. 1882), Isabella Edna (b. 1885), Harriet Jane (b. 1888), Hannah Loretta (b. 1891), William E (b. 1895), Joy Gertrude (b. 1896), Elma Winnifred (b. 1899).
In 1881 Canada census Hercules was age 28 living at Mulmur, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada with his wife Jane Ritchie (24), daughter Carrilin I (1)[3][4].
In 1891 Canada census Hercules was age 39 living at Mulmur, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada with his wife Jane Ritchie (34), daughters Caroline I (11), Mary Ann (9), Isabella E (5), Harriet Jane (2), son Robert J (8)[5][6].
In 1901 Canada census Hercules was age 50 living at Mulmur, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada with his wife Jane Ritchie (44), daughters Mary A (19), Edna (15), Harriet (12), Hannah (9), Joy Gertrude (4), Elma (2), sons Robert J (18), William (6)[7][8].
In 1911 Canada census Hercules was age 60 living at Mulmur, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada with his wife Jane Ritchie (54), daughters Harriet J Ritchie (24), Loreta Ritchie (20), Joy Ritchie (15), Elina Ritchie (12), son Edgerton Ritchie (17)[9][10].
In 1921 Canada census Hercules was age 70 living at Mulmur, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada with his wife Jane Ritchie (64)[1].
Hercules died in 1939 and was buried at Creemore Union Cemetery, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada[11].
