Biography

The marriage register at Bardstown shows that William Ritchie took out a marriage bond to marry Carolyn Green on February 22, 1843; " not married " is written opposite names and date. He married Ann W Reed, January 18, 1848. Ann's maiden name was Belmear, and William was her second marriage. Ann died a few years after William. They lived in a stone hoyse on the Louisville and Nashville Turnpike later known as Jackson Highway. Their house was a noted landmark for years, but burned after Ann died. There was an old fashioned dug well with its "old oaken bucket" and cup, where all passersby could quench their thirst. There were twenty-four great nieces and nephews whom he mentioned in his will. He was considered very wealthy for that day and time.
