Biography

Hannah (Ritcliff) Berresford came free to the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Hannah Ritcliff was born in England probably Staffordshire about 1862.

She married John Beresford on 24 Dec 1776 at Alton, Staffordshire. [1]

Hannah travelled with her husband John Beresford/Berrisford/Barrisford, who was a Marine Private in the 41st (Portsmouth) Company as part of the First Fleet, to the colony of New South Wales on the Prince of Wales in 1787/1788.

John Beresford (Barrisford) was a breeches maker by original trade.

When the Beresfords arrived at Port Jackson, John was aged about 35 and Hannah about 26. John and Hannah eventually had five children and I am descended from their daughter Dorothy, who was their third child, born on Norfolk Island in 1793. JOHN : HANNAH BERESFORD

She passed away in 1842, possibly 4 Dec 1842.[2]

Ritcliffe-1 and Ritcliff-1 appear to represent the same person because: These are clearly the same person. The sources for her last name at birth are Ritcliff without the 'e', so Ritcliff appears to be the preferred LNAB. Thanks for reviewing.

Hi Janet, there is an unmerged match of this profile with Hannah Ritcliffe Beresford. The main issue seems to be working out the preferred LNAB, which is often the name at birth /baptism. Do you have any thoughts about this. Many thanks. Gillian

Hi Vikki, I'm looking at the unmerged match of this profile with Hannah Ritcliff Berresford. The main issue seems to be working out the preferred LNAB. Do you have a view about this? Normally it would be the name at birth / baptism. The baptism on Ritcliff-1 seems to be for the surname Ratcliffe. Where does the name Ritcliff/Ritcliffe come from? Thanks!! Gillian

Ritcliffe-1 and Ritcliff-1 are not ready to be merged because: needs further research but looks like a possible merge
